| Duke University's incoming freshman received a goodie bags that included a free iPod engraved with the school's crest and the words "Class of 2008" (as well as Belkin's Voice Recorder) according to a News-Record.com report that has a few undisclosed details: "The project is being funded with money the school set aside for a one-time innovative technology purpose, and it's not known whether the program will continue after this academic year. The $500,000 price tag includes the iPods themselves, salary for an academic computing specialist and grants to faculty members who participate." The article also notes that Duke approached Apple about the project and received the iPods at a discount as well as $10 gift certificate for each student to buy music from a Duke-only iTunes Music Store Web site developed by Apple.
"The iPods being given to students have 20-gigabytes of storage and a $35 voice-recorder attachment. They come pre-loaded with welcome messages from school president Richard Brodhead and provost Peter Lange, the school's alma mater and fight song, information about campus buildings and North Carolina's Research Triangle area, as well as tips from current students on studying."
The article also notes that non-freshman who are enrolled in classes that utilize iPods will be given a loaner. Duke has also posted a Website with more information on the program.
