Macworld Tokyo 2002 changes dates, location

Lynn Fredricks that Apple and IDG have rescheduled Macworld Tokyo 2002 from its traditional February date to late March (21st-23rd) and its location to the Tokyo Big Site convention center, which he says could be detrimental for the conference because of "much higher" air/ground transportation and hotels costs due to Spring Break travel:

"Those of you who frequent the floor and sit down with local vendors know that over the last few years, the number of local vendors and distributors have lessened or cut back on their presense. MacWorld Tokyo's attendance numbers have not only lost "headcount" but also the type of "head" has changed from the Macintosh professional to those who visit because they got tickets for free or cheap and need to burn off a Saturday afternoon (Ever see those guys selling tickets down by the subway station?). Rather than improve the image of the show, IDG Japan, and I assume Apple Japan, have elected to make matters worse."

    I approve...

I'm glad they are making the change. The Japanese showgoers really get ripped off because of the immediate proximity of the SF show. I never bother to listen to Tokyo because I know that Apple released the good stuff just one month before. At least Apple can come up with something better than "GeForce 3 released"...they've got an extra month.

    Just can’t win

Despite what logic dictates, the actual spelling is Tokyo Big Sight rather than Site, which is just another example of the strange Japanese-English that surrounds us everyday.

Since moving out to Chiba this summer, I’ve spent several evenings riding my bike over to Makuhari Messe in anticipation of this winter’s big event. Now, I find that not only will it no longer be in Chiba, but it will also be in the spring when I’ve finally left Japan after countless years of residence.

    Perhaps another reason...

"The Register" reported that although a PowerBook upgrade is due to be released this next week, "completely new models - described as a 'big revision' is coming in early 2002 at MacWorld Tokyo." (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/22166.html)

Perhaps Apple forsees needing an extra month to complete this major revision?

Let 'em take their time. Sounds like this event may be a biggy, may even be the time when they make thee announcement.

    A shame!

By serendipitous coincidence, I'm going to be in Japan for 10 days in the middle of February.

So, getting all excited, I researched and...

...found out that they moved the Expo. Oh, well.

    Proximity and MacWorld SF

    Howdy all,

I know folks were upset by the lame release plan last year in Tokyo -- so was I as a sat in the press pool and saw a rehashing of the SF releases and some pretty iMacs. One press guy in front of me was asleep, another was listening to music from a headset.

You should consider though the differences between announcements, releases and shipments of new products. Announcements are like commercial previews on TV. They look great, but all they do is...look great. It doesnt matter if something is announced at MW SF or MW Tokyo if the ship date is still many months away. Ideally, a product is announced at MW SF, and shipped at MW Tokyo one month later (where the Japanese version is previewed), and not by MW NY during the summer.

    Best regards,

    Lynn Fredricks
