Macrovision Corp has begun shipping FLEXlm, its licensing management pacakge, for Mac OS X. "(Our Software) benefits from the super-modern operating system's power, stability and advanced networking capabilities," said company officials in a statement. Several license options are available for FLEXlm, including a demo version.

Lovely! More technology that limits customers and their use habits.

FLEXlm is a license manager / auditor, and while that makes sense, I have no faith in Macrovision, based on their other products.

    silly

That's a silly comment. The use of FlexLM with which I am most familiar is with a particular high-end CAD program, which has a great many sub-modules, all of which are licensed, as well. FlexLM allows the licenses to be managed over a network more efficiently. So, if there are 30 seats of the base CAD program, a license for a particular, special (and no doubt expensive) module does not need to be bought 30 times, but rather, can be checked in and out by individual users, using the license server. So then, only two or three copies of it are needed. It's a useful thing to have if ever more complex and expensive software products are to make it to the Mac, and knee-jerk comments like that do not help.

    ...and flexlm

is what Alias|wavefront uses to license Maya (at least in Irix and Win2k versions).

Hey if you worry about copy protection, you can't afford the software this comes with in the first place.
And it actually really nice. You don't have to type in a serial number for every damn computer.

It works. It uses the network. It's Multi-user multiplatform, concurrent licensing.

It will encourage development of highest end products.

    Sadly

most companies are moving away from keyserving (Adobe, Microsoft) - this was great for educational institutions, now they're ripping every possible cent possible.
