Pioneer Planet has posted an extensive review comparing Mac OS X 10.1 and Windows XP Home. Author Julio Ojeda-Zapata says in one segment: "Looking to edit video on a computer? Get a Mac," and concludes "Apple can take heart in being at least Microsoft's equal in the categories we've covered, and superior in some areas."

    Excellent article

This is a well written article giving both the Windows XP and Mac OS X OS's a fare shot at a number of different tests that are actually meaninfull to everyday consumers. He compares doing everyday simple things in each OS, how easy it is to do them, which has better or fewer options and i believe he did a great job in showing the strong points of both OS's. I especially liked the familiar sounding line he used, "Wanna make movies? Get a mac."

    Great Article. but...

You can tell what OS the writer uses in the last line they leave you with...

"But watch out, Steve Jobs, because Bill Gates never stands still."

Yeah yeah Same ol Shiznit... Bill Gates can shove it... well you know where.

    Overcoming momentum

Those of us who would like to see more people using Macs need to come up with ways to counter attitudes like:

"But everyone else is using Windows."

"I can't walk into a department store and buy software for it."

"My friends have PCs, and if I got a Mac they couldn't give me copies of their games to play."

"They use Windows at my work so I should stick to what I know."

"iMacs are just kids' toys aren't they? I mean, they look like jelly beans, not a computer."

"I need to bring work home and it probably won't work on the Mac."

"What can the Mac do that a PC can't? And they cost at lot more."

"You can't fit expansion cards in a Mac."

"A lot of internet sites I've seen offer downloads for Windows but I haven't seen any Mac versions."

"My bank says its internet banking software doesn't work with Macs."

"There aren't enough viruses on the Mac." [Okay, just threw that in to see if you were paying attention.]

    747MHz Celerons?

    747MHz Celeron / 648Mhz Celeron / 120Mb RAM

Do you see the possibility existing that the author knows jacksquat about computers?

Strangely, most of you guys agree with the article.

    duh.

    XP Bites...

"In a controversial move, Media Player can't create music files in the far more popular MP3 format without add-on encoding software that costs extra."

"Microsoft is designating third-party service providers such as Shutterfly, Print@Fujicolor and Xdrive as Windows XP partners who will give it a cut of every transaction. This move is controversial because it gives the appearance of excluding other service providers and limiting users' choices."

    Pattern emerging?

    NICE!

This is one of the few articles that I've read that really does a great comparison. I think the interesting part is that I got a sense of the Mac being superior the whole way through the article, but yet, at the end, it sounds like the author leaned towards XP a bit. I was glad not to read how the Mac lacks software and speed -- two issues that ALWAYS seem to arise. In any event, great article.

    MP3 encoding...

...is dependant on CD-ROM reading-speed much more than it is processor-intesive. Just thought I'd point that out. Especially if he was using a superdrive in the mac which reads CDs slower than most drives...

    this author...

...has written a lot of articles covering Mac stuff. I get the sense that he knows both platforms pretty well, and doesn't have the inherent bias that post #4 is alleging.
