ProMax plans to unveil a real-time effects card for Final Cut Pro that is Mac OS X compatible in Spring 2002, according to MacNN sources. The release will include standard definition uncompressed as well as DV and will be dependent on MacOS X. Sources also reveal that ProMax is projecting better performance for its card under OS X than OS 9.x.

    Interesting

Does that mean we can expect a carbonized FCP by Spring?

    Some sources

Is promax's web site considered one of your sources? I downloaded a PDF on this card months ago. Good research, guys! Now take some of that time and do a little more spell checking on your site.

I sent an email to Promax today, inquiring as to the release dates of the RT-lite and RT-Max card. The RT max is the card you most likely downloaded a PDF of off of their site. They responded as saying the RT-Lite should ship soon. However the RT-Max project has been halted in it's tracks, and replaced with a new card, that will only work in OS X. This is big news. I am only a custumer, and have no inside info, but I would find it safe to reason that they feel confident that we will see some video Apps for OS X by Spring. Possibly sooner, since they hope to ship in Spring. Their RT card for Final Cut Pro is just now being released, months after the release of FCP 2. Makes you wonder if their release date is scheduled a few months after when they feel FCP might be released. Who knows, but hey, here's to hoping!!!

Another cool trinket, their RT-Lite card is very much software driven, based on QuickTime 5 technology. So it easily ports over to QuickTime 5 in OS X. That project wasn't scrapped. Seems like ProMax is really a believer in OS X.

Here is a piece from their emailed response.

"Here is the official email from
    Promax on that issue.

    ProMax Video Editing Solutions Update:

After a great amount of study and consideration ProMax has come to the conclusion that with the faster computers that were introduced in July and with added performance features coming in MacOS 10 that hardware for realtime video editing will be less and less needed.

With that in mind ProMax has elected to not finish our development of the RT-MAX PCI card and will immediately start development of a more powerful and less costly RT solution. With many many hours of develpment time and heavy investment in hardware this decision did not come lightly. Our new realtime product will include standard definition uncompressed as well as DV and will be dependent on MacOS 10. Features found in MacOS 10 shows great promise of making realtime video editing more affordable, more stable, and will offer greater peformance than with MacOS 9. ProMax like others must face it - the future is MacOS 10 not 9.

So with that in mind our product schedule follows:

    1. RT-Soft
    Will not be introduced

    2. RT-Lite - $495
Will be shipping by end of September, 2001.

    3. RT-MAX
Will be replaced by a new DV, as well as, uncompressed RT solution with a target ship date of Spring, 2002 - retail price less than $1000.

    4. DA-MAX+ - $1795
Will be shipping in volume early October, 2001."
