Apple eyes Chicago for retail store

updated 08:45 pm EST, Tue November 21, 2000

Chicago is the latest city to be added to Apple's retail store agenda, according to Chicago Business. Apple is reportedly near to leasing a vacated store front on Michigan Avenue and Huron Street, formerly a Gap location. The store could open as early as this Spring.

    Yea!

I always thought the Magnificent Mile would be a good place for an Apple Store. Huron is a good location. Right near Nike Town, the Sony store and Virgin Mega store, Disney, Tiffany’s ....too many to list! I'll be there opening day!

    Bad Idea?

Uh, isn't that area kind of stupid? Over-crowded? Not a nice place to buy a large computer, and kind of out-of-the-way to buy a mouse? There's a big difference between going on a "shopping spree" downtown to buy clothing or other easily carriable items, and buying big, bulky, high-end items. What's wrong with the suburbs, you know, where people LIVE and can PARK THEIR CARS?

    Clue less suburbanite

Yea. The streets are so crowed people walk shoulder to shoulder for most of the x-mass shopping season. Apple wouldn't want a store there!? They might have tens of thousands of looking at the best of what they have to sell EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY! Bad place for a store.

    What's more

The Miracle Mile is host to more than shopping -- much of Chicago's huge advertising and design industry is located there -- and they are still Mac dominated. This is a great location for an Apple store.

    no D.C....too bad

we could really use a physical presence out here to try and break the stranglehold Microsoft has on the mindsets of government IT workers out here...none of the ones I work with had any idea that OS X was coming, or what it meant for their jobs. All they're concerned with is phasing out the Macs so their jobs will be easier. Enough to make me cry....

    perfect location

Gateway has a store in the Loop and Comp USA is just 5 minutes walk in front of Water tower...think you can park there? Doesn t seem to stop all the people who shop there. People who shop for Furnitures on the Mile buy stuff and then park in the back for pickup. It is a perfect location since week end shoppers GO on the mile and Loop workers are 15 minutes walk from the Loop...also the Mile itself would be a huge advertising opportunity... Apple would really stand out as mentioned by other posts above, Chicago is now Digital and would benefit Apple. It would be the closest Computer store from the Nordstrom store... I can t wait to shop there instead of Comp USA (of which Apple hardware salesreps blow big time in Chicago btw -if I may say-)

    Uggghhh

Its not the "Miracle Mile". It's the Magnificent Mile.

They bus thousands of people a weekend in from out if state to shop there during x-mass. It's the perfect location for a midwest "showcase" store.

    It is a 'Concept Store'

I believe the new Apple store is a 'concept' store - it does sells Apple stuff but more important than that, to promote the ‘brand awareness’. The Nike and Sony place next to the new Apple location are the same idea. This new place on Michigan Ave. has great visibility and I believe is just the right place for such a store!

    Local Dealers?

Don't know Chicago.. are there any local dealers close to this location? Anyone to put the squeeze to like they're going to do in Palo Alto?
