iDisk now accessible from any platform

Stephen Sebeny notes with the release of OS X 10.1, users from any platform can log into and use Apple's iDisk, according to an email sent to iDisk users:

"Even the most die-hard Mac users can sometimes find themselves being forced to use a beige box. Thanks to changes coinciding with the release of Mac OS X version 10.1, being cut off from a Mac no longer means being cut off from iDisk. Behind the scenes, an advanced networking protocol called WebDAV is improving connection options for all users. Regardless of whether they upgrade to Mac OS X version 10.1 or not, iTools members can now access their iDisk from any Internet-connected computer that has a WebDAV client application, including several versions of Windows and Linux."

    It's already included...

MSIE 5 or later has WebDAV built in.

Go to File:Open, check the "Open as Web Folder" checkbox and type the URL:

    Sorta Works

I tried the idisk.mac.com/username/ thing and it works...sort of. I can browse the directories, but cannot open any files. Very cool none-the-less, and shows promise.

    I love standard compliant technologies!

    Win or older Macs?

There's a mac client at http://www.webdav.org/goliath/ that would let older macs work that I've tried and Win 98 has web folders. I've been unable to get either to work from behind a firewall. Sometimes I get to a password step, but not always. Then again, it doesn't work very well even on systems that support it with my 56k modem at home, sometimes even disconnecting my modem.

Anyone get this to work reliably with either windoze or an older mac (I have a 9600 with OS 9.1)?

    Re: Win

Works for me on win2000. (although no fire wall). You can't open files per se because web folders doesn't allow you to, you have to copy to your local drive to open them.

"Opening your iDisk using Microsoft Windows

You can open your iDisk using Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows 98.

If you're using Windows 2000, open My Computer, choose Map Network Drive from the Tools menu, and click "Web folder or FTP site."

If you're using Windows 98, open My Computer, double-click the Web Folders icon, and double-click Add Web Folder.

In either case, enter the following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/member_name (where member_name is your iTools member name). Use your iTools member name and password for authentication. "

Does anybody know where the apple itools signup page moved to? It previously was accessible for non os9/x operating systems, but now it seems to have moved...
    Thanks!
