they're going to integrate the two instead. You can already log into AIM with an ICQ number and password (not that that's especially useful). Frankly, ICQ has always been a really quirky program that never stabilized; at least AIM has a reliable and workable interface. I'd be happy to see a merger.
you can NOT log into aim with an icq #.
this functionality was allowed once and it was on an old version of AIM. the current versions do not allow this.
FWIW, this download is carbonized. Both the installer and the application itself work on OS 9.x.
Probably safer to use the "official" 9.x version, but wanted to point out that OS X wasn't required to see the pretty new interface. No real new features that I can discern, BTW.
Not only are there no new features, many old features are missing. From what I can see:
- Voice chat
- Image Connection
- File Transfer
- graphic display of smilies
are all not supported in the OS X version although in the Mac OS 9 version they work fine and are interoperable with other platforms. I hope they catch up the OS X version in features soon.
Seeing as the first version of AIM for X was released within a week of X itself, and the biggest "feature" they've added in the SIX months since has been buddy icons, I wouldn't count on them bringing it up to par with the classic version anytime soon.
Looks like Apple got the short end of the stick out of that instant messaging "alliance" with AOL from a couple years ago.

if only they would get their act together and release a usable OS X version of ICQ then I'd be happy. The ICQ for OS X that's available is by far the worst OS X application I've ever seen, it's a memory hog and unbelievably slow. Well I guess a company as small as AOL can't spare the resources to do a decent port of ICQ to OS X.
