Firmware update 4.19 for PowerMac, Cube, iMac

Paul Nishikawa notes that Apple has quietly posted on its ftp site new Firmware Updates 4.19 for the Power Mac G4, G4 Cube, and slot-loading iMacs (a similar iBook Firmware update 4.1.7 was released in May, however, the 4.1.9 counter part for iBooks is not yet available on Apple's ftp site). The documentation reads:

Firmware Update 4.1.9 includes improvements to starting up Mac OS X from the local hard disk, FireWire target disk mode, network startup, gigabit networking (on systems with gigabit hardware), and system stability. This update also adds support for additional security options that allow the Open Firmware to be password-protected.

Int'l English?

Anyone know if this works on Int'l Englisg G4s? It's in the English-North_American folder, but I can't see there'd be any difference?

a G4 is a G4, it's software that makes its distinction between US and International (unless you count monetary symbols on the keyboard)

Quietly?

I don't like the "quiet" equation. Firmware isn't something you want to s**** around with. I'll wait until Apple announces it "loudly." :)

Strike my comment on everything works...

It totally muted my computer. There is no sound whatsoever apart from the start-up chime.... Blooody Apple!

This will never happen - it's a firmware update after all. Realistically though, it's a good idea to wait until hearing from reputable sources as to whether or not there is a possibility of problems. (Obviously, and as noted by so many folks already. :)

Sound-job...

In-farking-credible... I plugged in headphones... and lo and behold... sound started pouring out of the internal speakers! It completely reversed the way the sound-output works.

I can only now assume that when they are not plugged in, the system routes sound to this port and vice versa... What an incredibly stupid mistake! :rolleyes:

Worked Great

I ran the update on my Cube and everything worked just great. Still have all of my ClubMac memory and no other problems. Bring on OS X 10.1

In OS 9 or X? X used to have that problem.

You might have to roll back your firmware, though you might need to call Apple to do something like that.

G4 4.1.7 firmware

The new 4.1.7 firmware rendered my McAlley keyboard useless. Not a single key works anymore !
Switched back to an Apple keyboard, and everything worked fine back again.

Where is MacFixIt?

Kudos to the person who mentioned this earlier. I'm not installing this thing until MacFixIt acknowledges it. Lord knows, Versiontracker has "sniffed" Apple's ftp servers before, distributed test builds, then yanked the items in question. No way.

Smooth update

I am running OS 9.2.1 on a dual 450 G4. I obtained the firmware update via the Software Update control panel. All 1.5 GB of my RAM seems to be fine as well as my audio.

The only curiosity, is that during the firmware update, my DVD drive opened and then closed. There was no disk in the drive. I wonder if the firmware update has something to do with DVD playback under OS 10.1.

firmware ok for me

I installed the firmware update, and the sound is working fine. The memory is fine too. I purchased the memory from memorytogo.com and it was cheap, but still works.

I also ran in OS X and OS 9 with no problems. I didn't even have to restart which was nice. My DVD drive did not open and close.

call me a guinea pig...

i figured i would install it on my work machine... a first-gen g4 tower with dvd (sawtooth, i think). sound seems okay (though the firmware seems to have jacked it up to full-volume). the dvd open and closed for me as well, so i have to think this updated something about dvd playback (perhaps with audio? remember all the problems with audio-sync problems with the first imac dvd's?)

so, there ya go. i survived, but it seems i may be one of the lucky ones.

i have no external speakers installed, but i did have my headphones plugged in throughout the process.

On my 733 Mhz blue G4 the external sound also disapeared. Is there a way to get the original firmware back?

Oh no...

Well I decided to take my chances...bad idea! This sucks. Is there really no way to undo a firmware update?

I ran the update and it all seemed to go fine. The DVD tray opened and closed and my Mac rebooted. But I noticed that it wouldn't recognize ANY of my Firewire peripherals. I've got 2 GB worth of data on a Firewire HD that I MUST get at tonight or else I'm screwed, and this stupid FW update @#$@#$@ up my computer totally!!!

Not only that, but I've had to go back to the puck mouse that came with my G4. My Logitech USB mouse is no longer recognized by my G4. My external speakers no longer work, either; I only get sound from the built-in speaker. I tried my Soundblaster Live for output and my headphone jack for output and both are dead, nothing, nada, zilch.

This Firmware update has TOTALLY DESTROYED MY POWERMAC SYSTEM!!!!!

I'm going straight to Comp USA to see if I can straighten this out. At least they might be able to retrieve the data from my Firewire HD and transfer it to zip disks, but it'll take at least 8 zips for what I need. :-/

Morons.

Why do people think "Oh, I have this incredibly important project due tommorrow, and people say that upgrading causes problems. Wow! I should upgrade! Because i'm immune. Nothing affects me!"

C'mon. Be smart. If you value *anything*, *don't* upgrade if you're doing crucial work.

I've read from several reader reports that upgrading to 9.2.1 fixes the sound problem.

Nope. I'm running 9.2 and I can only get sound through the internal speaker.

I was able to get the data off the Firewire drive at CompUSA. They also had problems with the Powermac G4s on display when they updated them. They salesman I talked to said the external speakers no longer work, and when I plugged in my Firewire HD, it wasn't recognized. I had to use an iMac to retrieve the data from the HD.

The guy at this CompUSA said they are thinking of dropping Apple computers because of incidents like these. They get little support from Apple with anything. Even with the 10.1 update, they basically were given one master CD, and then told to burn CDs using their own media for any customers who want them. Apple is apparently passing the buck off to their distributors.

Now my OS keeps crashing. WHAT THE h***, Apple!!!!

I am totally screwed. I need this computer to work on, it is the only one I have access to. I'm about to start punching fists through walls. I'm done for.
