Morningstar comments on Apple

updated 10:20 am EDT, Wed September 19, 2001

MacNN reader John Robokos notes a Morningstar.com article discusses the state of the PC industry from the point of view of the HP-Compaq buyout. In terms of Apple, the author says: "Apple, of course, is a different story, since it builds its own operating system and has proprietary components. Apple sells a differentiated product; the Wintel crowd sells a commodity... But trying to compete in consumer PCs against a low-cost producer (Dell), the maker of a radically differentiated product (Apple), and the world's pre-eminent marketer and designer of consumer electronics (Sony)..."

    Hmm..

Methinks that its time to throw out the decaff at Macnn.

Anyway, BusinessWeek right now has a very interesting piece about Dell and its tactics - I dunno if it's online yet. Making the point basically that he spends nothing, nada, zilch on research, but is a killer in terms of finding efficient business models and sucking the life out of anyone he begins competing with.

It is really quite likely that the market will in a couple of years in retail be just Dell, a few no-name Japanese PC makers who get their parts cheap because they're close to the actual makers eg of LCDs, and Apple. HPaq and IBM will retreat from retail. Well, IBM already has, but you see what I mean.

That will probably increase the price differential between Apple and PCs in retail... or will it? Maybe Dell will have to up prices to keep shareholders happy.

"Compaq and HP can't do a darned thing to make their boxes better at digital music and imaging than anyone else's boxes, because the stuff that makes them better--software and components--is available to any PC manufacturer."

Exactly! I always chuckle when I hear clone beige box makers talk about how THEIR machines are better than their competitor. Any advancement in hardware, software of technology is SHARED among all the Wintel box makers, making it impossible for one company alone to differentiate themselves from the crowd.

Except for Apple, that is. I think in a few years people will realize what a smart move it was for Jobs to kill off the Mac clones, for he probably saw this industry consolidation coming over the horizon. The Wintel boxes will kill one another, just like the airlines do when they collectively slash prices and their profit margins tumble.

Apple is in a very sweet spot right now. Who'd a thunk it.

    Michael Dell should just

liquidate the company and give the money back to the shareholders.

I think killing Mac clones was one of Job's worst ideas. As I recall, it was about the same time that Apple G3's came out, and those sold so well that Apple couldn't keep up in production. If clones were still producing then, it would've meant meant more sales of the Mac OS, but no fewer sales of Apple machines, so more profit for Apple and greater share of the overall PC market for Mac OS.
I doubt MS cares how many PC mfgs there are or who the last one standing is, as long as they sell PCs and need Windows on it.
