Sears' overpriced iMac, Circuit City sells C

updated 08:45 am EST, Tue November 21, 2000

Sean D'Esposito noticed that Sears is selling the iMac DV SE for $1700, $200 over the retail price, and that his local Circuit City has begun selling the Power Mac G4 Cube, along with iMacs and iBooks.

    Sears is cheaper

Sears almost always has their Macs at $100 over the 'MAP' price. Since sears will beat other stores prices, plus 10% of the difference, by increasing the price another $100 to $200 over MAP, you get a bigger discount...

    G4 Cube at CircuitCity

I, too, was surprised by the addition of the G4 cube at a CircuitCity at which I was doing a DemoDay event.

A couple of the salespeople wanted to know what made the price tag worth $1,799.95 - they allowed as how they wouldn't be pushing people towards Macs due to the cost factors when they can sell a lower priced PeeCee and get a bigger spiff on that sale. APPLE STILL NEEDS TO LOWER PRICES!!

Obviously you have never been married or had a partner sharing finances. It's a joint decision. And, if she says no, then it's a wash. She just better not ask for any jewelry in the near future...

    Sears and overpriced iMac

Sears routinely highballs the price on it computers, including the iMac. I was an employee there when they first start selling them. They beef up the price so they can later put up a sign that says "Save $200" and then use Apple's MSRP for the "sale" price. It's not the brightest move in the world (most iMac shoppers would recognize dramatic increase in price right away). On the other hand they tend to leave it on "sale" for months at a time.

    Correct G4 Cube price

The G4 Cube sells for $1,500, since Apple is offering a $300 rebate.

If you are a student the Cube sells for $1,350. For $1,820, you get the Cube + the 17" Apple CRT. They offer zero payment for 90 days and 2.9% financing (deal is until year's end).

That is not exactly a horrible deal. Arguably, considering the aethetics & bragging rights of the Cube and the excellent speakers you get with the machine, it's a good price. The 17" flat CRT has killer screen quality and is incredible in terms of looks.

    Sears Price match Policy

Sears actually won't match 10% more than the difference, but you can get them to match any internet price from a licensed(not necesssarily by Apple) online distributer(ie, eBay auctions don't count). And since Sears usually has the stuff in stock, you don't have to wait for it or pay shipping charges.

    Sears is overpriced

I work at Sears and we are always $100 higher than everybody else. That way when we have a sale we can honestly say you are saving $100. Yeah I know its dumb. BUT as one reader pointed out Sears will PRICE MATCH the Internet (plus shipping)!!!! Not many places will do that. Oh and the 10% off the difference thing isn't
