PC sales may decline in wake of attacks

updated 09:45 am EDT, Thu September 13, 2001

Worldwide PC shipments will decline more than forecast as sales are hurt after the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, according to an IDC analyst who cites possible erosion of consumer confidence in the economy.

    No doubt.

Last thing we all need is a dip in consumer confidence, but I can't imagine many people feeling secure about anything, the economy, their safety, etc, after this. The market will undoubtedly fall farther. I'm gonna be broke by the the new year.

    It's up to the consumer

It's up to the consumers and the US government to assist the economy in recovering from this tragedy. I forsee a massive campaign aimed at increasing consumer confidence in light of the tragedy.

    Next quarter

I agree with an Analyst I saw being interviewed last night. He said that all sectors will probably suffer this quarter but that will cause an increase next quarter as everyone gets back on their feet at the same time.

He used the example of the Quebec ice storm a few years back where our (Canadian) economy didn't do as well that quarter since most of that province was without power for some time. The quarter following that, however, was very strong since that is when all the rebuilding occurs.

    Seems logical,
    Jeff.

    negative predictions

While on the one hand such negative predictions after a tragedy are obvious, facile, and safe to make; OTOH, they tend to produce the future they predict. In this way, they almost constitute another form of terrorism. We don't want or need a lot of negative projections at this time. We do need optimism, hope, motivation to get back to work.
