After having trouble installing OS X Server on his dual processor 800-MHz machine, Stéphane Pinel writes that Apple Europe support confirmed that Mac OS X Server "can't run on a multiprocessor machine."

    Sucks

That's insane! Multi processor machines are ideal servers.

    Isn't strictly true...

We're running OSX Server 10.0.4 on a dual 450. Works great, uses both CPUs. Maybe it's true for the Quicksilver boxes, or, maybe they meant the OLD OSX Server (1.2). It *does not* run on dual-processor boxes.

It works just ducky on my DP 500 and my mono-500 iMac SE. And yes, Yves, it's the same bloody OS as the consumer version with some Mac-GUI'd services overlaid.

if OS X Server 2.0 ran...

on the new QuickSilver G4s, don't you think Apple would have at least one DP configured server offering at store.apple.com?? duh.

    They did have one

A month or two ago there was a dual 533 G4 sold as the OS X Server option. That was the latest version of the software. Therefore, I don't think this is a it is reported.

They were almost definitely trying to install OS X Server 1.2. It is absurd to think that OS X Client would work and not OS X Server. They are the same kernel just with different included features and support packages.

    whatever

1.2 (Rhapsody based)cannot run on a multiprocessor. Anyone on a DP with 10.0.3 (X Server 2.0) will tell you that X will install and run just fine, though. Part of the problem here is MacNN re-reporting bad, unclarified news from MacFixIt - and the other part being most of you WANT to believe Apple is that dumb.

As far as Server offerings from Apple - there WERE other choices for servers as of a few weeks ago - this is the only thing showing right now which is leading to all of the widespread speculation of the NEW DPs showing up at Seybold... I'd keep my eyes open for October.

    Clarification

As someone said, the latest version of OS X Server doesn't support dual-proc *Quicksilver* machines. It works just ducky on pre-QS G4s.

I expect that Mac OS X Server 10.1 (or whatever version number Apple uses for the server that's based on Mac OS X 10.1) will rectify the situation.

    Illusions

None of you people are actually looking at what is being said by anyone here. There are NO issues with the QS dual-G4s!!!! This person is probably using a pre-OS X Server 10 version of OS X Server (figure that sentence out).

Just look at some of the dual QS owners with OS X Server server in the other posting of this news today:
