Kevin Watkins notes that Apple has released a single new "QuickSilver" configuration of the G4 Server at the Apple Store, after pulling older models late last week. The $2800 configuration includes OS X Server software, a 733MHz G4 processor, 256MB of RAM, an 80GB drive (7200 rpm), a CD-RW drive, Nvidia GeForce2 MX graphics card, and Gigabit Ethernet.

    it won't sell...

The product manager that made this up should be fired:

This box has no server specific hardware (UPS, extra ethernet cards, hot-plugable drives, extra room for expansion) and is way too expensive in its present form. I used MacOS X server, the latest release, but re-installed client and added the extra services I need. Most of them are available opensource.

Why do they sell this as a server... it's only running so called serversoftware.

    sigh

GeForce and CDRW for a server. Hahaha.

    $2,800. No other options.

Come on Apple, you can do better...

    It's not really a server

...if it doesn't support RAID. Apple's pathetic lack
of native support for software and/or internal
hardware RAID is silly, just silly. For $2,800
one should expect to get at least some cheapo
IDE RAID mirroring of the 80 GB disk, heaven
forfend an OS X supported SCSI hardware RAID
card and a pair of 36 GB 10K disks.

$1,000 for a "server" OS that doesn't offer real
    server storage options? I don't think so, Apple;
we're going to have to do much, much better
    to compete.

    New rack mount soon

Look for the much rumoured rack mount units within the next two weeks. That is why this low-end unit is the only one currently being offered. They had to have something to fill the gap between when the stock of the Graphite models ran out and when the rack mounts start shipping.
