On2 has made its VP3.2 video compression technology available to the open-source community. On2 claims its algorithm is capable of producing compressed video that is smoothly playable at 640x480 resolution. The codec has been licensed by Apple for inclusion in QuickTime.

A word bout VP3 on OSX

Well it's kinda available, kinda not, they have instructions on how to compile the Quicktime codec for OSX. But there's some overhead for the average guy like me, got this from one of the text files in the source:

The Requirements for Building On2 VP3.2 QuickTime Component for OS X:
* Codewarrior 6, patched to 6.2.
* Universal Interfaces 3.4b10 or higher. (the project's access path for Universal Interfaces points at Universal3.4 inside CW6's MacOS Support folder)

Carbon

Well, it's a parted Carbon project. It's the same with Quesa.
Maybe somebody will transfer it to Project Builder someday.

Cool Codec

On a side note the quality of this codec is impressive and it is easy to get good results.

one sweet playback...

and darned smooth transfer... this is the slickest looking smallish playback i've seen in QT. Is it / How is it available for encoding on existing os9 quicktime?

Encoding

On my Dual G4 533 it's quicker than Sorenson 2 encoding the same clip.

VP3.2 vs. Sorenson 3

I've been playing around with the "Pro" Sorenson 3 encoder, and and to me at least, it looks like the quality is much nicer than what I'm see with those sample VP3.2 movies. I don't know about encoding speed.

solved my own problem...

it downloads the codec first time you need it - then it's available in pro editions - i'll try some dv streams later today, i assume re-encoding downloaded qt movies is a bad testbed, neh?
