Macworld UK has posted a gallery of images from the MacFest 2001 conference in Leeds and Birmingham, which took place earlier this week. The expo featured exhibitors such as Adobe, FileMaker, Macromedia, Symantec, and UMAX.

    From the looks of it,

that idiosyncratic British understatement is out in full force. Man, you guys need a Macworld Expo bad! :)

They don't even know who people like Guy Kawasaki are. They probably draw a blank on the name Phil Shiller.

    Pathetic

They claim 400 at one and 600 users showed up at the other. Kinda seems to vindicate the fruit pulling out of British shows a few years back.

    Pathetic? Yes, Apple's

support of loyal users in the UK is pathetic.

It's Catch 22. Apple pull out of a show - few people turn up - Apple vindicated. Which came first, chicken or egg.

There is a much larger expo in London in November, organised by an independent Apple-centric ISP. It was a great success last year, and Apple (as at time of posting) have deigned to attend this year.

There is loyal support in the UK for Apple. Given their appalling treatment of us, it is surprising.

BTW, I do know who Guy Kawasaki is. So there.
He is the Apple master who uses a ThinkPad.

    Yanks

You really are all full of it, aren't you?

Apple pulled out of the UK shows because of a disagreement with the company that organised them (who wanted to make it a "Mac and PC" show - groan!). Until then there were big turnouts for the shows. Nothing like in the US, but the shows were far smaller than in the US too.

"They don't even know who people like Guy Kawasaki are. They probably draw a blank on the name Phil Shiller" - again, arrogant US c***. Grow up. Why would kiddies like you know more about Apple than a long-time Apple user in the UK? Because Apple is American?

If your view is that you Mac users in the US somehow "own" Apple, then go ahead - start lobbying Apple to stop selling outside of the good ol' US of A. Then see how long Apple lasts.

There's nothing that pisses me off more than US arrogance, and the second two posts here have more than enough of that.

The first post, in case you guys have a humour bypass, is actually right on target. The show covered in Macworld UK is a crappy little thing that is all we have until Apple's reappearance at MacWorld UK in November - but hey, Mr "Pathetic", Apple ARE coming back to the UK shows this year, and I'm sure anyone who supports Apple, whatever country they're in (other than short-sighted kiddies like you) should see this as a good thing.

    Re: Yanks

I agree with the above post.

As a long-time Apple user and advocate I don't know what annoys me more: the sheer arrogance of a few US Apple users who seem to think that just because Apple is an American, they "own" the company; or the lack of overseas support from Apple themselves.

Every time there's a post about an overseas event or overseas issue, the US patriots are out waving their flag and insulting non-Americans: how about being positive for once? As has been pointed out above, without us overseas Apple users, your beloved US computer company would have gone bump long ago.

And as for the "they don't even know who people like Guy Kawasaki are. They probably draw a blank on the name Phil Shiller" comment; I'm insulted at the tone and the arrogance -- you sound like George "Dubya" Bush making foreign policy. Many UK Apple users know as much as you about Apple: "they" are not as dumb as you think.

This kind of attitude gives the USA it's reputation for arrogance overseas.

    Non US users

I hear that the Paris Expo expects upwards of 80,000 visitors. That's not a bad figure considering Apple has yet to get its act together in Europe.

That kind of support speaks volumes when you consider the problems we Europeans often have to go through on a daily basis.

It seems that some US users (and probably a tiny minority) believe that 400+ users getting together is nothing special.

    I think its pretty amazing.

Outside an Expo has anyone been in a gathering of that many users?

    I think it's cool...

I think it's kinda cool that some UK Apple events were attended by Apple. I don't understand the think behind some of the 'Yank' posters here.

Market/mindshare is market/mindshare no matter where it's from. Here's something sad for you mean spirited 'fellow' Americans. Despite all of our U.K./American differences, the one common thing is the ubiquity of Windows. Why is one of the most crapy things to be made here, everywhere else??

Then, when there is an event for one of the best alternatives (Macs) some can only just talk trash. Apple should do more about the U.K./European market. And they should also 'get on the boat' with Asia. Perhaps the problem is that too many employees in Apple think like the few who post on these message boards. Narrow.

    Apple is not an island...

    Food for thought.

    US Arrogance?

I like how you automatically assume that a) the posters are "kiddies", somehow making them ignorant in light of your apparent aged wisdom, and b) that the poster was an American at all. Could've been a guy from Denmark, no user is listed. But no, just assume it's an American because it was rude. That's really high-road of you. Way to go.
