The Washington Post profiles a video editor who used a 400-megahertz Power Macintosh G4 and Apple's Final Cut Pro video-editing software to create "Star Wars Episode 1.1: The Phantom Edit." The "phantom editor" used the VHS release of the movie to create an edited DVD on his Mac.

    Oh, but a measly 400MHz?

Surely you jest! *No one* uses a 400Mhz computer for anything anymore. Well, maybe for surfing the internet and Solitaire, but professional video editing?? Surely you don't speak of Pentiums and K6s and K7s. :)

I use a G4/400 every day at work and at home for graphic design, desktop publishing, web design, gaming, and yes - even video capture - and don't have any problems with it. Sure it could always be faster - but it ain't broke.

And I know lots of people who use slower iMac G3's for similar purposes without complaint. I'll put an old Mac up against and equally aged PC any day!

    what about videocards?

Altho i'm using Avid MC on a daily basis i cannot help lookin at FCP for the featureset it comes with (with that pricetag!). Now, even tho im impressed by FCP, i dont get this story - because u just cant edit on a suite that has no realtime capacity. Its downright ridiculous. Apple is doing an awesome job software-wise, but they should sell FCP bundled with choices of videocards. Frankly, who wants FCP w/o a videocard ???

BTW, does anyone know a URL where all the supported videocards (by FCP that is) are listed, tested and/or benchmarked ? plz post. tia :)

Apple does offer FCP with a Matrox RTMac (this has been true for about a year).

    What do you mean measly?

I guess you're saying all those people who bought the 400MHz TiBook aren't doing professional video editing.

Hmmm... wasn't video editing exactly what Apple marketed the TiBooks for?
