Apple, alongisde Hewlett-Packard, 3Com, and Xerox, has helped to found the Anti-Gray Market Alliance (AGMA), with the mission of "assuring customers greater product satisfaction, educating the marketplace about the illegal or deceptive brokering or diversion of products, and to address the unauthorized flow of products to the gray market." The "gray market" involves the unauthorized transfer of brand name computer products. In Apple's case, gray market resellers are often able to undercut prices offered by authorized resellers by re-packaging systems meant for distribution in other countries or otherwise subverting Apple's traditional resale lineage.

hhmmmm...
I would never knowingly buy grey market products but having to pay the middle man sucks too. Such an ingrained system but it is no good for the customer's pocketbook.
