Sony stops eVilla production

MacNN reader Benjamin Kerosky reports that Sony stopped production of the eVilla, a network appliance based on the BeOS on August 30. "Looks like the end of the line for the BeOS, as Palm has little reason to develop it as its own OS any further now that its only client for a standalone BeOS is no longer there," said Kerosky.

    BeOS is far from dead

It's more than likely that Palm will continue development of the BeOS if only as an OS for their next major version of handhelds. Since this news posting seems relatively unaware of the facts, BeOS is a sleek, easy to use, great system but never had the application support needed to really take off. With handhelds getting more powerful (Palm is going to be using processors from ARM in the future) and a further blurring line between handheld and full-fledged computer, you can rest assured that Be will live on in Palm revisions, much in the way NeXTStep is noticeably active in OS X.

    BeIA

Also, Be had something other than BeOS. BeIA (for Be Internet Appliance) was an OS used by some internet appliances. I'm not sure whether eVilla used BeOS or BeIA, but I know of at least one other device that used BeIA. Compaq had an internet appliance in the iPaq line; the ones sold in the USA ran WinCE/PocketPC, but some of the ones in Europe ran BeIA.
Of course, with yesterday's surprise announcement from HP/Compaq, it looses some relevance. But still, I imagine that HP will continue to support Compaq hardware for at least another few years.

    BeIA vs BeOS

eVilla used BeIA. Palm said it is not going to continue development of BeIA as a seperate entity. http://www.begroovy.com has more details if anyone is interested. It was a nice OS, the company just didn't know what to do with it. Oh well.

    eVilla not dead?

I read the original announcement last week, and I believe they were killing it in the US, not all over. Places like Japan, where space is a premium and they like nifty techno gadgets (OK, americans do too), it should still be working.
