A Wired article talks about possible opportunities for Apple is slumping economony, given its unique position among the PC makers: "And the company may be poised to become a much bigger player down the road, market watchers said: 'As a brand, Apple is one of these top names in the country...'"

"And the company may be poised to become a much bigger player down the road..."
Like by merging with another company (Palm?), just like HP and Compaq did?

    Bigger might be bad

While I would like Apple to achieve the success it deserves (its contribution to personal computing is enormous, even though sadly it is really other companies - especially Microsoft - that have profited financially from Apple innovations), I would not like to see it grow into a corporate monolith like IBM or HP.

Apple, for me, represents a way of doing things differently to the dominant 90% corporate group-think.

For Apple to "become" that 90%, it would be changed from what it is now, an alternate computing lifestyle.

    Need more tools...

For the Mac to make better pentitration I think there needs to be more people who can write software for the mac. Depending on Adobe, Microsoft and a few others for mainstream software is looking more and more like Apple is begging for scraps.

The PC software market is 10x or more Apple's market so it make good business sense to develop for a market with a better return on investment. For Apple to compete it needs to have software that satisfies it's customers needs. I think that means developed by it's customers or lots of small developers. Apple's former product Filemaker is such a tool. Lots of small and medium developers had created a large market for this product. Unfortunately right now for performance using Filemaker the Mac would be second choice.

Mac made greater performance leaps when there were clones than since. Lots of developers made that possible. The same can happen for software if folks could speak Mac specification as easily as they can Windoze, I think Apple would be on the right trail to having more software on the retailers shelves.

    Cool.

Glad SOMEONE noticed. My fave line:

"But the big winner could turn out to the only player in desktop computers that doesn't make a PC: Apple. "

Heheh... I'm not typing on a PC? Oh, I guess not. It IS something different, isn't it?

    Don't underestimate...

...customer loyalty. I've turned down jobs where I would have had to use a PC, and I've forced purchases of Macs at PC-only companies. Dell WISHES they had evangelists like me! Now all we need is 30 million more like me... :-)

    More users, More software

Good article, I use to get Wired. They had a really good spot on the whole MS court case and exposed what we as Mac users already new, MS steals and intimidates it's competitors. Back to topic, Apple needs to be bigger for software makers to write software for them. For many makers it's all about the numbers, of this number of users, how many will purchase our software. My personal pet, the one I HAVE to use on a PC or VPC, ArcView GIS. I would buy it, but how many other Mac users would. And by the way, I hate using PC's in any form; it gives me a headache when it doesn't work right, so pretty much all the time.

    Here's an idea™...

Gather your thoughts and make one or, if needed, two posts instead of sallying forth with drivel and redundancy... or do you like to see your inane thoughts in print to the extent you will puke out any sort of jive? Your mental masturbation is tiresome as h***, Mr. "backslash O". You seem to be all over every damn thread. Lay off the crack or the meth or the caffeine and get your head out.

    flawed article

The article has one good idea -- that Apple can take advantage of the PC price war, but it contains much speculation and little hard evidence.

    For instance:
"Apple used to be the biggest computer manufacturer in the world."
I think we all know that this was never true. IBM always was, always will be bigger. Even Radio Shack was bigger when they were competing.

But the Apple brand does stick out more and more in a world of ticky-tacky beige boxes sold on streetcorners and bargain basements.

I'd like to see this idea explored more thoughtfully. Show historical examples where commodity product sales were displaced by well designed products with higher prices. Offer specific suggestions about how Apple might position itself in the retail market and the other markets it serves. What strategic alliances would fit this projection? What would be the ideal product mix to capitalise on the Apple brand? ...

    Of course is especulative

Because Apple could take advantage of PC price war but up to now has not being able to deliver that dream, like and LCD iMac. Apple is maybe playing conservative moves when they should be more aggressive than ever. Gaining market share under these conditions for PC manufacturers should be easy than ever. It is NOT enough to keep profitable, look at the stock price, it does not really reflect a profitable-no lay-offs company, isn't it?

I am not saying it is easy but they should try hard NOW to gain market share before everybody else gets in gear!
