Afternoon tech news: Former Apple executive Ellen Hancock has been ousted from her position as CEO of Exodus Communications after the company announced a sharp downturn in revenue and profits resulting from a sluggish Web services market; Many of the promised USB 2.0 devices, which offer transfer speeds up to 40 times greater than the initial USB standard, are beginning to ship in quantity; Intel and AMD are working to come to an agreement over the diverging bus standard technologies, 3GIO and HyperTransport.

    Bus Standards

Hmm, AMD supports it's own bus as well as backing up Intel's. This is kinda disconcerting.. Although it points out that the two are (apparently) concentrating on different things, I'll believe it when I see it.

    USB 2.0 Peripherals

The linked ZDNet article should be titled "USB 2.0 peripheral begins shipping" since they describe one Maxtor hard drive being released that supports the 2.0 spec (which is just another slow USB hard drive, unless you get a USB 2.0 PCI card or wait until next year when 2.0 will supposedly be included on PCs).

The big laugh is at the end of the article where the usual unnamed "industry observers" feel that FireWire will die out when Intel starts including USB 2.0 on their mobos.

How can firewire go away if microsoft has clearly said they'd support firewire. Who are these industry analysts? They must be complete morons.

Microsoft announcing support for firewire means they'll stick support in the OS. Not that they're going around touting how great it is and forcing everyone to use it. If no one puts it in their computers, it don't mean squat if its supported.

    USB vs Firewire

I can't imagine USB 2.0 replacing firewire, mainly because of the advantages of the technology (you can't use USB to hook to camcorders together, they need a computer in between). Plus it was designed to make sure the data going through gets through at the proper throughput. With a harddrive, who cares if the data gets there a second longer sometimes than others, but if your trying to output some digital video, that will s**** up your output.

But if it is the end of firewire, does that mean USB is going to get an emmy next year? Or maybe that Firewire's emmy is one of those "lifetime achievement" awards they give out to the has-beens of the TV landscape.

    USB replacing Firewire?

I doubt it.. Firewire's first revision tops out at 400mbps. USB 2.0 (read Second Revision) tops out at 480.. 80 mbps may be worth while to some folks, Firewire should be up to 800+ by the end of the year (well, it's already there, it just needs to saturate the market... that's of course always the difficult part.)

In regarding to MS putting Firewire support in their OSs. I think what we ought to say is, MS is *not* including support for USB 2.0 right off the bat..

Intel has fully adopted 1394 now, it announced it last week (with ATI).
