    cool

That's really cool. Mindmapping is a great memory technique. I've always just drawn my mind maps by hand. I wonder how doing them on the computer will affect effectiveness...

    "Mindmapping"...

Okay, other than the glitzy graphics (which I have to admit I think are rather tacky), what does this app do that OmniGraffle doesn't, particularly when paired with OmniOutliner?

In case you don't know, OmniGraffle is a wonderful graphing system from OmniGroup, and is a Cocoa app for MacOS X. (Ah, that's it... MindMap has a Wintel and MacOS 9.x version.) The auto-layout system causes long time users of Visio to drop their jaws. I often just toss random objects on screen that represent brainstorming items, wire them up in a logical manner, and let it do the layout, hierarchically or fan-like. If you prefer, you can toss the items in by creating a pure hierarchy in OmniOutliner, then importing it to OmniGraffle, and it takes care of the layout.

    OmniGraffle: $59.95
    OmniOutliner: $21.12

    Educational costs are even lower.

    OmniGraffle & MindMapping

For a user, it doesn't matter much if the app is Cocoa or not if it doesn't have enough features. OmniGraffle is very underpowered, and it not designed for generation of mind maps at all. With the same result you can use AppleWorks for mind maps - will it be convenient? And I don't think it's great when a software won't run under classic Mac OS - LOTS of people are still using it.

    OG vs. MM

    Which features are missing?

    How is it underpowered?

These are precisely the questions I would like answered.

AFAICT, 'mindmapping' is tossing graphical objects on the canvas and wiring them up by associative properties... which is exactly how I use OG. If it's not, please explain the difference.
