    Yikes

This thing is a bit of a mess! The installer sucks, there's a list of things that won't work longer than your arm, won't function in OmniWeb or Netscape 6... With OS X this install should be as easy as dropping a file (or two) into /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/.

    Come on Adobe!

    Whats this for

    Does anybody use this software?

I installed it the first few times it came with photoshop, but now I am just annoyed that the installer even asks me about this format.

Is this adobe's answer to the flash format? well if it is they failed miserably

    Hmmm

Sorry, but did any of you notice the "10.1 flavor" note above? I wonder if that's the root of your troubles...

    svg vs. flash

okay, here's what i know, or have kinda surmised from all the hype (please, if anyone knows better, feel free to correct me).

according to adobe, svg is a more versatile vector-based file format, in the same vein as flash. and, supposedly, the svg plug-in can load and play flash 4 (?) files, as well as svg files. however, the flash 4 and 5 players only handle flash format files (.swf).

yes, this is adobe's attempt to wrest some control over vector-based web files from macromedia, and, if i recall correctly, they even got the w3c to give svg its collective "blessing" as the standard going forward.

unfortunately, their installer and implementation of the technology leaves a bit to be desired. for instance, try loading an svg site in ie 5 for mac, and you'll either get it to stall during load time, or present you with a lovely error-message/redirect from adobe saying, in essence, "don't blame us that internet explorer sucks, but svg won't work with it at this time - please switch to some other browser" (i am paraphrasing here, but it was quite funny when i and a colleague ran into that message...

    so there ya go.
