", 0, 0);

Evening tech news: Gateway will cut thousands of jobs and post a loss in the third quarter and may exit the European market altogether; Intel still expects demand in the second half of the year to increase from the first half despite the weak economy; and An increasing number of people in the open-source community are very concerned about Microsoft's initiative to buy software patents and to patent as much of its own technology as it can.

    Poor Ol' Gateway

    I have a very hard time imagining them still in business 2-3 years from now. Shoddy product, virtually no R&D. Booo-hooo....

    I say...

    ...let M$ patent all their c***. It's not as if someone couldn't/won't come along and make something that far exceeds what they have stolen...er...I mean created.

    As for Gateway: oh well. I'm much more concerned with the Amiga assets they posses...(is that right or was it Dell that acquired the Amiga stuff).

    Microsoft

    Considering how well the Justice Dept understood the technology sector, the thought of Microsoft patenting as much of it's "own" technology is scary.
    Where are the limits when you can't buy a PC without Microsoft's software / OS all over it?

    Not forever

    If I remember right, that was only for 5 years. I think we're 3 years into that.

    First emachines,

    now Gateway, then DELL.

    All non-R&D PC assemblers reach the same fate.
