ABBYY has released the public beta of FineReader 5 Pro for Mac, the company's first OCR (optical character recognition) offering for the Mac OS. Sources tell MacNN that the company is planning to release a gold master version of the software by September 10th, when it will be priced at $129 for an upgrade from any OCR software, including competitive products and versions bundled free with scanners.

    Yikes!

That's a lot for any program, and that's an upgrade price? What happened to $49.99?

    No OS X?

With a hefty upgrade price and no OS X version they don't seem to be very smart.

    Not Yikes

If you think that $129 is too much, what do you think of $499.99 for Scansoft's Omnipage Pro? The latter, incidentally, hasn't been updated for years.

Thank you, ABBYY, for releasing FineReader. I'm about to try out the beta...

Most scanners seem to come with some sort of OCR for PCs. They are probably not as feature rich as FineReader. I guess I'm looking for something more lowend.
