Apple ends its CD-RW promo, cut PB prices

Apple will be ending its free CD-RW promo with the purchase of Titanium PowerBook G4 today--about 10 days ahead of the expected Sept 3 end date and one day before it is expected to cut prices on the laptops by either $400 to $500, depending on the model.

Hmmm...

Today might be a good day to buy a TiBook from a store that has 30-day price matching.

Damn! Slide in just under the wire. Get a free external CD-RW, and then price-match a few days later when the exact model you bought is $400-$500 cheaper!

I want one

I want a Titanium Powerbook. Bad. Apple is contributing to the crime rate...since I might just have to rob a bank in order to get myself one of the new Titaniums when they are introduced. Or, I'll go to the event, and as Jobs is showing the Titanium of, I'll run up, swipe it from his hands, then skidaddle. Nahh, robbing the bank sounds less risky.

how can they arbitrarily end a promotion that has a specific end date a week of two before the expiration? By law, if a company advertises a certain price on a certain something that ends on a certain date, they are oblged to honor that.

Wow, cheap TiBooks are a reality. Now let's see the revision. My bet is that they get introduced before Apple Expo Paris.

Apple said in the fine print that they can change the terms and conditions of the promotion AT ANY TIME. This is perfectly fair, especially if new products are coming out....

Yes, CNET radio did a news spot on it and said that the ad had a diclaimer that the offer could be revoked or changed without notice. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Wow, cheap TiBooks are a reality.

LOL, you have an interesting definition of "cheap".

Let's say I'm a potential customer looking for a laptop, and I need PC Cards and high-res video out. Apple's only laptop that meets those criteria is $2100! I can't get anything cheaper, whereas I can get a Dell that meets those criteria (yes, I'm aware it's lacking in other areas) for $1200.

This is a problem, and will continue to be. Why don't they sell one with a (cheaper) normal size screen? That stupid custom LCD is probably 1/2 the price!

Funny thing is, you can buy a Dell with a 1600x1200 screen! The resolution of the TiBook could fit INSIDE that, and if you wanted the widescreen aspect ratio, you could just black out the pixels on the top and bottom!

$1599 to start. And it has firewire built in. (I don't know why they don't hype it more, but it does).

Actually, the $1599 model of the Dell 8100 doesn't have the 1600*1200 screen, with that it starts at $2117. It does have firewire, but not built-in ethernet (add another $119). It also is 1.75 inches thick and weighs 7.9 pounds, which doesn't compare very well with the 1 inch and 5.3 pounds for the TiBook.

Actually, no, it is not $2117. But the good news is that anyone can go to dell.com and see for themselves.

Customize the h*** out of it, and see what you come up with. Note that it has a 3 year warranty, or you can save some $ by knocking it down to 1 year (which is the same as Apple). It also has a docking station available which is handy.

Ok, sorry, I missed the firewire, because it wasn't on the build list (listed as 1394 in the specs). However as mark42 points out the 1600*1200 screen puts the price up somewhat from your quote, it does weigh more than a TiBook and has a lower battery life.

Additionally you might note in the specs:

IEEE 1394 integrated port (1394 cable and software sold separately)

So you get a firewire port, but there's no wy to use it without shelling out yet more money, Apple at least gives you a cable, drivers to connect to devices and some usable software.

So let's get back to Dell pricing: take the mid range screen, add an extra battery (to get up to TiBook battery life), an ethernet card and the firewire cable and video editing software... and you get $2,254.

If you want to add an 802.11b card it'll cost you $139, where an Apple Airport costs $99.

Oh, drop to the lowest spec screen and you save $50, which still makes it more than the TiBook and you still get stung $40 extra for the wireless card.

Yes

The 8100 with a 1600*1200 screen is $2,117.00, it's clear to anyone, go to the URL you specify, select "Ultra XGA 15" display" and click "configure this system. Big, bold and blue "$2117.00", and for that you don't get an ethernet card (you get 3 years telephone support, which you're going to need, it's not really an option :-)).
