Motorola may consider selling or spinning off its semiconductor unit if it cannot turn the struggling business around, in a Reuters article that quotes representatives as saying that the unit has "lagged its competitors in performance."

    i'll say!

"lagged its competitors in performance." if this mean profit performance and the ability to cost-effectively scale up for production runs of succeeding iterations of G3s and G4s, that is the truth...

    I don't think so...

Who knows, if AMD buys them .... we could benefit. Remember what I said, never say never. I once said I'd never own an apple, then an IBM (well guess who makes my CPU)...

    I think...

...that Apple may not be able to fight the good fight much longer when it comes to processors, and they may have to get on board with someone like AMD to produce their chips. There's lots of rumors that Apple has basically taken chip design in-house and could outsource the manufacturing to someone other than Motorola.

    people, people...

Does no one remember a little company by the name of IBM? IBM has the largest capacity chip foundries in the world, they even do production runs for other companies. You could look it up. And, IBM makes PPC chips... their G4 chips are screamers and have hit clock speeds in excess of 1.4GHz, are in the 1.6GHz neighborhood and higher. I will grant you that they do not have AltiVec, but they are incorporating SIMD into their G4s and that is a similar architecture to AltiVec. Once again, you could look it up. It's no secret nor is it a rumor.

I have been aching for IBM PPC chips in Macs for quite some time now.

    It's F@*#ing Time!

The time for MOT's semiconductor divestiture is NOW! They've had their chance... They have NOT led. IBM WILL!
