Apple has posted its Mac OS 9.2.1 Update. Update: MacNN reader Norm Phillips writes that the update installed over OS 9.1: "The Mac OS 9.2.1 update is for BOTH computers with Mac OS 9.2 installed AND Mac OS 9.1! I installed it successfully on my 450/DP G4 with Mac OS 9.1 on my repair HD, swap partition for my Yellow Dog Linux 2 HD, and my main/Classic HD!"

Sounds more like old news to me (the 9.2 one has been up forever, but it used to point to the 10.0.3 update).
This update updates 9.1 as well and is 82 megs. I wonder why Apple wants and AppleId?

The link now points to an Apple download site. It is a big update, works with 9.1, and has the same system requirements as OS X (as far as the processor goes).

Before You Install
This document tells you how to prepare for installing Mac OS 9.2 and gives compatibility information and basic troubleshooting.
Before installing Mac OS 9.2, do these tasks:
· Mac OS 9.2 update requires Mac OS 9.1 if you are performing an auto or manual update.
· If you are installing from the CD, start up your computer using the Mac OS 9.2 CD by inserting the CD and holding down the C key until you see the CD background.
· Turn off any security software that you may have installed on your computer.
· Make sure your system will not go to sleep by dragging the slider in the Energy Saver control panel to "Never."
· If you have a PowerBook, make sure that it is plugged into AC power.
· If you are upgrading from Mac OS 8.1, start up from the Mac OS 9.2 CD.
If you're installing from a network, or if you can't start up from the Mac OS CD, be sure to do the following additional tasks:
· Turn off file sharing.
· Turn off any virus-protection software that you may have installed on your computer.
· Turn off all non-Apple extensions and control panels. Open the Extensions Manager control panel, then open the Selected Set pop-up menu and choose Mac OS All.
· Restart your computer.
To ensure a smooth upgrade, check with the manufacturers of any non-Apple software you use to make sure it is compatible with Mac OS 9.2. If you do experience a problem, see the troubleshooting chapter in your installation manual for information on isolating compatibility problems.

It didn't accept my connection several times in a row. I kept getting page-not-found messages. I just kept re-entering from MacNN, once every couple of minutes until I got all the way in. Once I got in the download went at 60kbytes/sec.
I'm not at my Mac right now, but am I to understand that this updates 9.1 to 9.2.1? I thought that Mac OS 9.2 was a 600+ MB CD. Correct me if I'm wrong.
As this is an updater and not a full system install, it only updates componets of 9.1. Thus you have to have 9.1 installed already.
Used the above link, works great w/ d/l of 110Kb/sec. Haven't installed it yet though (still running 9.1).

It updates OS 9.1 or higher to 9.2.1. That's what the update thing says anyway...my guess is the 600 mb cd included a few more things that were not needed, or maybe it was a full installer cd instead of an updater.
I'm getting 5 to 7k/sec on my 56k modem. :- But at least it's not going badly. I figured 9.2 was going to be released with OS X 10.1, but I was wrong.
Ran the installed on my iBook2. Got about halfway through and I noticed the screen went blank as if it went to sleep. Mouse/keyboard didn't wake it up and HD activity stoped. So I forced it to reboot and now I am looking at a flashing question mark. DOH! Left my start up CD's at home.
Did you turn off extensions and make sure it isn't set to go to sleep, and also are you running off the power adapter?
I'm not going to install 9.2.1 on my main machine...going to try it on my PowerBook G3 first to make sure all goes well, and see what software is incompatible.

I think the compression statement is their general statement they use on OS releases. It mainly applies to the disk level or auto-compression (like DiskDoubler and Stuffit Spacesaver), not so much to TFI (although TFI has been notorious in not working on new OS versions, probably because its hacked into the OS at such a low level). But if you have so little disk space that you need the likes of SpaceSaver or the ilk (hey, anyone remember Stacker!!!!), you probably should stay away from OS 9 altogether. You'd save more space that way.

it is DAMN fast, apps launch startlingly quick... IE 5 splashscreen flew past my eyes, ditto launch time for iCab and pages load faster too (both IE and iCab)... it does break the DiskWarrior extension version 2.05... does NOT break anything else on my Macs...
and it came out on a day when i felt like heaving a semi-trailer truck at Jobs and company... btw, be SURE to read the ReadMe in the actual installer itself!!! i note that one poster did not pay enough attention to the ReadMe and allowed his iBook to go to sleep during install, BAD BAD, dead iBook... ReadMe says to turn Energy Manager to "Never", etc... make sure PowerBooks/iBooks are AC powered and not running on batt!
I downloaded the update by simply going to the Versiontracker OS X updates site (http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/index.shtml) and clicking on "82.0 MB". I was able to download it in less than 5 minutes. I installed it to update my OS 9.1 installation, and it works beautifully.

You'll notice over toward the right where it says "Download Mac OS 9.2.1 for improved Classic application compatibility." That doesn't sound like an accident to me.
Guess that means that they were just tweaking some stuff (in 9.2.1) before they let it out the door as an update, rather than just hardware support. In fact, if you think about it, maybe ThinkSecret had it backwards when they said that 9.2 was an update and 9.2.1 was for hardware support...

Agreed. I was saying it was a fluke when I started downloading it, because my download went fine but others were having problems. There is no doubt that this is an official Apple update.
Will there be a CD release of this update? What about Language Kit issues (ie, will we have to buy CD if we have language kits)?
All of the read me files state that you must have the CD for Language Kits (again).
No word yet on how to get CD, though...
I think the International versions are already available....someone already posted the English-International version.
Language kits are not the same thing as the International versions of the system software, I believe...I think they allow you to switch the language that your system and menus display or something, but I'm pretty sure it's not just the system software version..

Downloading 9.2.1 at over 100 kb/s! Great! And for those woondering if moving to 9.1 is worth it, I use a 2-yr old 333mhz iMac and it rocks since I moved to 9.1 and added ram. I do bought X but 9 is so fast now on my little orange mac I just can't switch yet. Can't wait to see if this update will make it even better.
My iBook did not go to sleep, not sure what happened. I think the screen just shut off and I should have been more patient. Anyway I have since installed it and now Tropico works. Yay!

I *hope* 10.1 is also put for download, even in parts. The 85meg file took less than 10 minutes to download and I dont mind waiting an hour for 10.1 I think alot of broadband users feel the same way.
20 bucks for an update CD isnt the end of the world, but waiting weeks for it to arrive will suck.
In your post you asked if there is a reason you should jump on 9.2.1 if you are running 9.1 BUT NOT OS X...
In a word, YES! 9.2.1 is faster yet and it does not break anything (third-party software) on my Macs with ONE very small exception: DiskWarrior extension version 2.05 is now broken under 9.2.1, and I could care less. It has no bearing on the functionality of DiskWarrior 2.0, the extension (version 2.05 extension) is merely a "protection" feature of somewhat dubious value anyway, IMNSHO.
GO FOR IT, ALL YOU USERS OF 9.1!! YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY.
I used tome viewer to see if there was a way around their install script, but had no luck. Apparently Apple would prefer you didn't use this update on a box that hasn't profited them recently :-)
Has MacNN even *read* the download page? It says it works with 9.1 or better. They shouldn't need a reader report to confirm that...

Just upgraded to 9.2.1 from 9.1 on a Powermac G4 400, w/ Radeon and 576 MB RAM. The update went off without a hitch.
I've only been using 9.2.1 for about half an hour, but it seems like apps launch MUCH faster compared to 9.1. I'll have to use it a bit longer to be sure, but I noticed right off that IE 5 barely had time for the splash screen.
I love it when Apple gives me free stuff! OS 9 is so fu[king good...and Apple just keeps making it better--faster, more stable. What a rush.

How are your DVD players working? Apparently, 9.2.1 puts some older extensions in the root directory that need to be removed in order for some to get it working from the Apple menu.

I just installed OS 9.2.1 on my iBook 500 MHz DVD, and the DVD player works just fine. Dunno what the confusion is.

Personally, I'd never take an older Mac past 8.6
My old PowerTower 180 felt much slower under 9.0 (especially without SpeedDoubler!) So I never bothered to go fully to 9.

Apple has to drop support for machines sometime. It could be that some of the code in the supporting these machines caused other problems/slowdowns. They've barely support the x100 series the last couple of releases, and that's now gone too.

I get the error message "can't install Big System Morsels" what is wrong. I have tried re-installing 9.1 and then upgrading to 9.2.1 but no go.
OS 9.2.1 will not upgrade my English-International Version (MacOs Z1-9.1) - at least it won't on my Pismo Powerbook.
That annoying bug where all the gifs appear as some weird transparency is fixed! Whatever Apple screwed up in 9.1 is right again.
One thing I noticed is that I have a dual 533 G4 with an nVidia card, and 9.2.1 installed what appear to be two new ATI extensions. I have all my ATI extensions turned off 'cause I'm running nVidia, but the installer installed and ACTIVATED two ATI extensions. When I rebooted, my screen redraw became insanely slow. Must be a conflict b/w the ATI drivers and nVidia. Makes sense....I guess.
Apple needs to come up with a smarter installer that DOESN'T install ATI / nVidia extensions if you don' t have the freakin' card. Lord knows how many people out there never open their extensions manager and have no idea.
I am running OS X on my Power Mac 7500 upgraded with 400MHz G3. I wanted to update my classic env to 9.2.1 but the installer just reports that my computer is not supported and quits. Any hackers that can make this work!
Go to Apple's web site, and follow the steps to the download, and download the proper, Internation English version of the updater.

sawgraphics: in response to your comment, and contrary to what one reader posted, and for the benefit of all, the ORIGINAL PowerBook G3 is the old, very old grey boxy powerbook G3. This was right before the WallStreet, the first real PBG3. If you have Wallstreet (black, curvy case) then that version and any powerbook since will run 9.2 and OSX 1.xx . In fact, I ran the beta OSX on my PBG3 Wallstreet as well. I downloaded 9.2 yesterday and will install it soon. From what I am reading, you should do the same.

My Sonnet upgraded 7500 seems to be fine with the various components of 9.2.1, but totally chokes on the system suitcase. I changed the type/creator code of the big system morsel turning it into a suitcase, but on restart got a nice message informing me that this version of the system is incompatible and i should restart. Hopefully somone out there may be able to help us legacy mac users....
i have less problems in os 10.1 with the new upgrade....the 10.1 installer installed a couple of 9.2.1----but witht this full 9.2.1 installer, stability is way up....peace....
This update STILL doesn't fix the problem with rendering a quicktime in OSX in classic mode from after effects. The rendering just hangs at the end. When is apple going to fix this? Will I ever be able to work in X?
BTW, I don' t know if this update fixes the carbon lib collapsing problem.
After installing the Mac OS 9.2.1 upgrade on my G4 533 DP with a Cinema Display, I experienced a major problem. The first time I booted after installation, the Cinema Display went black and its power light started to flash immediately after the Mac OS 9.2 banner appeared. It was very repeatable. On a lark, I booted with extensions off (shift key down) and everything appeared normal (after a significant amount of disk churning). Then, when I booted normally, everything seemed to work fine. I guess that 9.2.1 just needed to sort some things out.
so far, wake from sleep is a MILLION TIMES slower... (pismo) aargh!
Stuffit's TFI works fine.

I also have a cinema display connected to a cube. I have problems with itunes & osx. When i turn visuals on fullscreen, it will not fill the screen. It leaves a black area on either side of the monitor, about 1.5 inches. Do you have this problem as well? I've asked Apple and they will not comment on this.
Bishop: upgrade to the latest version of itunes in OS 9 and OS X and the visual will fill the screen for both. Only the latest version supports full wide screen images for both versions.
I am experiencing a little odd behavior now that I have 9.2.1 installed. After my stock G4 goes to sleep, and then wakes up, it is really slow to process keyboard input. I can be typing away, and it slowly draws the letters on the screen. I have to reboot to fix it. I haven't looked into it much yet, but I thought I would report it. When I find the reason, I'll post it as well..

macaddictg4: I have been using the most current versions of itunes on both 9 & x. It has always worked fine in 9. The first version of itunes in x didn't support fs visuals, but 1.1.1 seems to support it on everything except the cinema disp. Just to be sure, I threw out both copies of itunes and their prefs & reinstalled everything - still doesn't work in x. Do you have a cinema display and does it generate fs visuals in x?
install turned on appletalk, which slowed down wake-from-sleep, so it's all good.
except for a few finder freezes (which, on restart, set the clock to 1904...)...

On reboot, I go into open Firmware, and get the prompt.
by using the 'mac-boot' command, I get a reaction, but get a Default Catch error, and a memory address (?)

9.2.1 update fails to install on an Umax C600 (PM6400 clone), upgraded with a Sonnet Crescendo G3 card. The installer recognizes the computer as not being one of the targeted machines.
