Another Apple Retail Store will open this Saturday in Chicago, according to an article in the Chicago Sun-Times: "The Woodfield location is the first of three sites slated for the Chicago area (North Michigan Avenue and Lincoln Park are the others) over the next 18 months, and the fifth of 25 freestanding Apple stores expected to open nationwide by the end of 2001."

    Lincoln Park? Surprising.

I'm surprised to hear that Apple's planning a Lincoln Park store. Three stores in Chicago is a LOT, and I imagine that most people who would go to LP to buy a Mac would be willing to keep go to N. Michigan Ave. instead.

Is there that much of a pent-up demand for Macs in Chicago? Each of the Apple stores is relatively close to another Apple retailer: there's a CompUSA downtown, MicroCenter on the west side, and CompUSA in Schaumburg. Granted, only one of these is near the El.

    Freestanding Stores ??

I thought all the Apple Stores were going to be in malls and strip malls. I didn't know they were going to have some freestanding units

    Re: Freestanding

Apple is going for visibility. So yes, in popular malls they will be seen. But certain streets in some cities are just like a mall, people roam around and window shop. Michigan avenue is the ultimate of these, in addition to many common stores you'll find the Sony store and Hammacher Schlemmer. Apple fits right in here. They've been holding an ex-gap building vacant for almost a year now, prime property that wouldn't normally stay vacant for more than a week!

As for lincoln park I'm surprised by that and have not heard it elsewhere, Sun Times isn't exactly the most trustworthy source either. But then again that is where you'll find a lot of SOHO and creative professionals in the area.

    Lincoln Park?????

The core of the corporate colony???? Those ex-fratboy, miller lite-swillin, republican-voting chowder heads won't know what to do with an Apple store. It will probably do well just from goose-stepping gentrificationists walking in thinking it's a Gap. Think Different doesn't mean getting a silver Jetta instead of a black one... damn suckua MCees.

    No way for LP...

There's no way Apple is going to build in Lincoln Park. The only location that would make sense is the Armitage-Halsted or Clark-Fullerton areas and both are less than 2-3 miles from the Michigan Avenue location. And for the record....I am an ex-fratboy, republican....who chose a silver Jetta! Miller Lite is for Cheeseheads...I drink Old Style.

    Lincoln Park was confirme

When Steve Jobs held the Media Event announcing the retail stores. Lincoln Park WAS a location. I live in Chicago.

I wonder how a LP store would affect business at the Micro Center up the street on Elston? My guess for a location would be furhter north, toward Diversy, Clark, Broadway

    clark/fullerton???

clark st??? i dunno where that came from. The majority of people in that area, while very trendy in their own way would find a store like Apple's out of place. almost every shop all along clark caters to a very trendy, albeit bohemian crowd. Coffeeshops, bookstores, etc. Nothing high ticket. First off, the old Gap on Michigan Ave is great and goes without saying, and although Lincoln Park is relatively close, you have to understand that people in that neighborhood like to stay in that neighborhood for the most part. The Lincoln Park people are creatures of convenience, and I think Apple realizes this.

And Lincoln Park is by nooooo means the conservative, republican image everybody's making it out to be. Next to Halstead/Belmont, Lincoln Park might as well be titled "boystown...the sequel". Miller, Old Style??? It's all bout Rolling Rock, come on.

    North & Clyborn?

I've been saying it and saying it... Watch the area of North & Clyborn...

Big shopping area and a great location for all the people that don't want to deal with either fighting the traffic and tolls to Woodfield or paying $20 for parking downtown to pick up their new Mac on Michigan Ave..
