In a continued effort to clear out inventory, Dewey Maxwell noticed that Apple has added yet another promotion at the Apple Store. Users who purchase a Power Mac G4/450 receive a $300 mail-in rebate, while those who purchase a G4/500 receive a $500 rebate. The offer is good until the end of the year.

    Sumthin's Up for January

I wonder if this means that there is going to be some major releases form Apple in January at MacWorld, or are they just hurting for some revenue?

Definitely not revenue, they'll be losing a lot of profit from this. I think it's defintely a combination of clearing out the extra inventory from last quarter and preparing for a speedbump of the PowerMac G4 line.

    Profit?

Not too much, remember that Apple's margin is now 48%, that's (for the 500 DP) $1640 pure profit. So a loss of $500 might put a dent in it... but it's better than being left with a ton of them when they are worthless. As for revisions, The G4 Line will probably introduce a newer/faster version of the chip, maybe the G4+ but it may not be ready by MacWorld San Francisco in January. The new top of the line would be at least 600 Mhz if not faster. I hope (though not very likely) for four processors in the top of the line (@ 600 Mhz a piece), The Middle G4 would be a Dual 500 Mhz, and the lowest end would be Dual 400 Mhz. That's what I would be guessing, hoping for. As well as a new PowerBook (G4?), the new Prosumer Portable, price drops for the iMacs (G4 for top of the line?), price drops and increase in coolness of the Cube (that's pretty tough). These are just guesses but... let's hope.

    Speed Bump and More!

From what it sounds like, they maybe planning to bump the iMacDVSE to a G4 400mhz as the Pro series G4 Towers will be all dual G4 450 and up to 600mhz+. The low end iMacs may get DVD standard along with firewire on the plain iMac350.
We all know the Powerbook is up for revision, I can bet we'll see a G4ev or some sort of a G4 which doesn't need a huge heatsink.

As for the other lines, I will guess we may see the following by MacWorld NY 2001 or slightly earlier:
    iBook Speed Bump
G4 Cube Speed Bump or worse scrapping for a more upgradible G4 Cube with modular add-on(dock station for PCI cards, or other cards or wireless handheld)

    Future

Don't think that the Duals will stay after jan. 2001.
Motorola couldn't produce speeds above 500 MHz therefore Apple
introduced the duals. My guess is they will drop the them when Motorola will come up with the new G4 generation..
BTW, i'm really waiting for the new PowerBook, any rumors?

    UMA 2 Macs

It is a foregone conclusion that Apple will introduce the UMA 2 Motherboard at MWSF, that being said it also stands to reason that the the PowerPC will reach 600. If Apple wanted to make a really big splash, make a 4 processor 600 Mhz DDR top of the line G4+ and sell it for $4k. I paid nearly $5000 for a Mac II with a 20MB HD, 4MB of RAM, of course I did get 2 floppy drives and it was the best investment I ever made.
    Imagine a 500 MHZ Dual G4 for $1600, a Dual 550 for 550/600 for $2600 and a G4 Powerbook for $2800. Now we are ready for OS X

We will know in about 8 weeks.

    Tom
