The newest member of Apple's Board of Directors, Dr. Arthur Levinson, recently purchased a stake in the company, according to a Macworld UK report early this week. Filings from the Securities and Exchange Commission show that Levinson bought 80,600 shares in Apple, or approximately $1.55 million (estimated from market value at the time). Dr. Levinson is chair and CEO of biotech company Genentech and joined the Apple board in August, replacing retiring board member Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Levinson's presence on the board and strong support of the company (he filmed a testimonial praising the G4 Cube prior to joining Apple) is expected to help strengthen Apple's already-high marketshare in the scientific and high-end educational market.
