Tech: Palm to introduce m125 next week

updated 06:05 pm EDT, Tue August 14, 2001

Evening tech news: Palm is expected to introduce the Palm m125 next week, a new $250 low-end handheld targeted at back-to-school shoppers; Microsoft has denied a report issued earlier today that the motherboard of its XBox game console contains a flaw that could delay manufacturing by a few weeks; and some virus writers are now targetting instant messenging networks, such as MSN Messenger, which could pose a menacing threat to corporate networks.

    "Low-end???" Right!

How can they call a $250 PDA "low-end" and in the same breath say it's for the "back to school" crowd??? Let's see, do we buy clothes for Billy this year or just a PDA? And Billy, we know the $99 Palm 100 isn't good enough for a beginner like you...

Didn't they have so many in the warehouse they were going to start destroying them to protect their pricing structure? So here are the marketing geniuses thinking up a new plan:

"I know, if we RAISE the pricing structure on the low end model and then target kids going back to school, we'll increase our profit margin enough so that we can "give" (with the finger gestures) the glut of inventory away to less fortunate schools and charitable organizations. And then, when the glut is all gone, we will have established the "low" price for a PDA at the $250 level!"

    ;-)

    Ever stop to think

That 90% of the Palm Student market is college students? In which case, Back to School is right now, where the other schools are already in session as of this week. At my orientation, I saw 1 out of 3 students with a Palm of some kind, mostly a m100 or m105. Should the m125 come out, it will be the PDA I buy, because it will have a useable SD card, for RAM upgrades... but if the m105 drops down in price, I'll take it instead. And 2MB of RAM is not enough for anyone. My mom is by no means a power user, but one Maplet installed takes up 25% of the RAM... tack on Solitare, her names and appointments, and 200k or less is free in no time flat. This is a smart move, high school students will target the lower end units, this machine is much needed for the college crowd.

    Whoever thinks IM is a

"menacing threat to corporate networks" is already too far gone. Windows is the threat to corporate networks all by itself.

    $250=Low End?

Yes, I agree. $250 is not "Low-End". I remember hearing stories about how a four function hand held calculator cost $100. Now they cost less than $5.00.

When will we see Palm Pilot for $59.95 that has all of today features with what 90% of the market wants. No color screen, no wireless connectivity, etc. Just Address Book, Calendar, Notes, hotsync and make it programmable. I know others have made cheap imitators, but they left out the programmable feature - you couldn't download any extra programs to it.

I would love to replace my PalmPilot Professional with a new slim case Palm for less than $75.
