Industrial Designers meet in Boston

The Washington Post reports on this week's annual convention of the Industrial Designers Society of America in Boston, Massachusetts, where some designers will be calling for the demise of the "digital lifestyle," a phrase widely touted by Apple CEO Steve Jobs as the future of computing. Many designers feel that the "too cute" design phase is over, and will lead way to one of "simplicity, humanism and grace."

    Right on all counts

Call it "digital lifestyle", "cute", or "simplicity, humanism and grace." Apple's got the Wintel boxes beat on all counts.

    That's the iBook...

"simplicity and grace" are two words that fit the design of the new dual usb iBook. Apple's design team knew, a while back, that the colored plastic craze they launched with the iMac would surely die, especially when staplers, printers, and even George Forman grills popped up with candy colored coatings.

    I must agree

did you notice the colors chosen for the latest round of iMacs? simple and graceful. same thing for the latest G4 enclosure - streamlined.

    definitely

Apple's already right on it, again. All the same, I honestly cannot wait for a new iMac design; eventually, just switching colors just gets a tad on my nerves, even though they are definitely good..

    Read the article first.

This isn't YA Mac vs. PC issue. It's directly questioning this whole "digital lifestyle" - grace aside, do we need all this c***? Gas pumps with e-mail stations built-in? Internet access in the dashboard of your car? Design isn't just about looks - it's function and purpose. Do we want more and more complex computers that do more and more (and don't tell me that OS X is simpler)? How about something that my mother can understand instead?
