Travis Wright was informed by Yamaha technical support that the company is now shipping its CDR 2100FXZ CD-RW, which features a 16x/10x/40x mechanism as well as an 8 MB memory buffer, used to prevent errors when burning CDs. The drive is presently the fastest available on the market. [updated specs; site not updated]

    These new 16x drives rock

I got one about a week ago and it's FABULOUS! I can burn a whole CD in about six minutes! The one flaw I had when I got it was the CD tray kept opening for no reason. Since it's the only drive in my computer they told me to remove the Apple CD/DVD extension and now it runs like a champ! I highly recommend it!

    Who has them?

I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the FIREWIRE version. Who has them available? CDW and Outpost didn't seem to have them (they weren't even listed).

    Media?

One thing makes me nervous.. when CD burners started moving beyond 4x, there seemed to be the need to specify what writing speed the media was good for. I've seen 6x and 8x certified media. Then there was 10x and 12x machines. Now 16x. Can the media deal with this when the last certification I was aware of was 8x?

    yes RE: media...

12X, 16X media and most other speeds are available at various retailers. See DealNN for some good prices on CD-R, CD-RW, and other media. DealNN seems to list at least one good deal a week on different types of media, and you can usually pick up a large amount (100 pieces) at rock bottom proces thanks to DealNN. (I've got 100 12x CD-R's now that I picked up from CompUSA for $20 thanks to DealNN.

I, too, am waiting for the Firewire interface. I'm hoping that CD Cyclone or EZ Quest will offer them soon - I like their enclosures.

    external vs internal

I'll be buying an EIDE Yamaha internal drive in the near future to swap out with my DVD-RAM drive. I have a G4 450 MP and have heard an increasingly number of great reports as to how easy this will be to install and use.

    Yamaha 16x FW

Outpost.com has the external firewire version on 1-2 weeks for ordering. I placed my order about 10 days ago and it still shows backorder. The Yamaha tech people said it was backordered until 10 Dec so it's best to pre-order one now...
