A note from Apple engineering staff to the QuickTime VR mailing list says that "IE 5.5 SP2 [for Windows] will not use the QuickTime plug-in no matter what you do. Microsoft has disabled all 'Netscape style' plug-ins, there is nothing you can do. Look for information from us about how work around this problem in the near future." [emphasis removed]

    DOJ? Are you listening?

My God, Microsoft are brash with power.

Microsoft were losing the browser war, so what do they do? Force companies to include their browser with every Windows machine. Microsoft are losing the Windows Streaming Media vs. Quicktime war, so what do they do? Force Quicktime to be incompatible. Now every misguided Windows kid is going to say "Man, this Quicktime c*** doesn't work. Apple sucks." This is more of the same ILLEGAL business practice that should cause the split.

    Unfortunately Apple needs

Unfortunately, Apple needs to bite the bullet and rewrite their Quicktime Plug-in for ActiveX.

Yes, it sucks that Microsoft plays these stupid games, but Apple cannot afford to not have Quicktime on Windows. Apple has no choice but to play along.

And to play devil's advocate; maybe, just maybe Microsoft had good reason to drop support for a legacy plug-in architecture (but knowing MS, probably not ;-).

    What a shocker!

Gee, Micro$oft is pulling the plug on accommodating a competitor's product. There's a news item. Of course the great Beast of Redmond is going to pull quicktime compatibility -- how else are they going to get Windows Media Player to gain marketshare despite its poor performance. Unfortunately, the DoJ will likely not be able to move on this, as it is a feature issue, not an integration issue, as was the case with bundling IE and Windows. Besides, M$ is pushing XP out the door before the Government can file and injunction against it shipping. Blech!

Considering that most every plug-in in existence currently uses the Netscape format, this isn't exactly legacy. And remember, if you want to talk about legacy support, Microsoft is just now dropping compatibility for ISA cards within widows.

    Haven't Learned a THING

Microsoft is just ignoring everything handed down from the justice department and are continuing to cut out third parties while enhancing their own products. Someone just the other day asked me why I loathed Microsoft so much...made me realize how many people have absolutely no idea what kind of arrogant, illegal business practices these cowboys indulge in. They are making a mockery of the US Justice System.

    Bollocks

Virtually every plug-in for Windows has been written as an ActiveX control for years now including all the biggies like PDF, Flash, Shockwave, IPIX and so on. I'm surprised that QT wasn't already written as ActiveX, that's just the way you do things on Windows, it's not really up to Microsoft to support legacy technology, it's up to Apple to keep up with recent trends in software design, even if it is a competitor's product.

    Exactly

Blame Apple for sticking with outdated technology. Maybe this will force Apple to make a prodcut that actually works under Windows. It's like crying because Apple removed 68k compatibility from OSX.

    ActiveX?

Is Microsoft STILL beating that dead horse (ActiveX). They should take a lesson from Apple's decision to dump OpenDoc and lay that pony to rest. To the above commentors: Why is up to Apple to support an obsolete, legacy Microsoft technology instead of just using the standard method?
