America Online and MSN are among the worst-rated ISPs according to a Consumer Reports survey to be published in an upcoming issue. The survey gave "high marks" to AT&T WorldNet, BellSouth and EarthLink, Apple's ISP partner, for overall satisfaction.

    Wow..

Yeah, that's a real shocker. The the two crappiest ISPs aving the biggest customer base. Of course, Windows is the largest OS and it's also the crappiest. I shudder to think of all the people running the duo of AOL on a peecee.

    Earthlink DSL

I must say Earthlink DSL has been totally kickin' for me. I get consistent downloads at 160KB/sec and it hasn't been down (knock on wood) at all since I've had the service (about 2 months now).

Very impressed, although their support dept. is ridiculously busy. Ah well, can't have it all!!

    I remember when...

AOL was cool. I remember when I signed up, there were less than 300,000 customers. You could connect quickly every time, and there was a genuine feeling of community. Now, all the slick graphics and star interviews in the world can't do a thing to pull AOL out of the quagmire of total suckdom. Early on, they turned their backs on the Mac customers who made them a success initially. Their browser has always been absolute trash, and obviously their systems are constantly overtaxed. Maybe it's time for another class-action lawsuit? Nah, smart people just move on, that's all.

    lol cmon now

yeah and i remeber when icq and netscape didnt suk. whoops who owns them now? aol. good times....aol was never cool.

i like the microsoft guys resaponse "We're building out as fast as we can," Wain said. "It's an ongoing process for us." - lemme run this through my translater here.....dat dat dat ding. "were s******* u as fast as we can. its an ongoing process for us."

my aunt ordered aol against my advice. guess my 8 years on a mac mean nothing to a "but that aol commercial said" 1 month later as they charged her to much and for paying with her credit card (they charged her for that!) she went with earthlink like i told her to. never complained since. meanwhile my cox @ home, i remember it went down last november for over a couple hours and me and all my freinds all got 20$ coupons for amazon.com. so i bought leon (my favourite movie) uncut on dvd with 5 bucks of my own added. not bad.

Wow, you think being run by scientologists is bad, AOL and MSN are run by capitalists and monopolists! Exactly which is worse?

    Monopolists

...are worse ;). Mainly because they also peddle that horrid OS.

Don't forget, however, the actual ratings:

AT&T WorldNet, with 78 points; BellSouth, 76; EarthLink, 76; Prodigy, 73; Qwest Communications' Qwest.net, 70; AOL, 68; CompuServe, 67; and MSN, 67. The survey guidelines state that differences of five points or more are considered significant.

Earthlink shares second place with BellSouth at 76 points. Out of 100. Granted, the top score was 78, but would you be happy if you got a 78 on a test? It is sad that overall, ISPs are rated so low, considering how important they are in life (read: no ISP, no 'net.).

    AOL could save PC's!

I have a side business of making websites for other small business'. While designing and building a site it is extremely important to view your work on a variety of platforms, browsers, and monitor resolutions. Even on good equipment no other browser comes close to making a site look like you are using a 7 year old monitor set to 600x400 resolution set to 256 colors. When is Time/Warner/AOL going to address this problem? Is their browers intentionally "crippled" to work on the oldest and lowest quality hardware still plugged into a phone line? AOL could single handedly bring the PC industry out of it's present slump by raising the hardware standards for it's backwards software.

    No Ricochet Customers?

As a former Ricochet customer (for 6 years!), I'm curious how they would've fared in this survey ....

    P.S.:

If you're a Billionaire and you want your own ISP, there's this big auction down in California next week you ought to attend ...! :o)
