Other World Computing has posted a page with instructions on how to install Mac OS X on an unsupported machine, such as the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500, and 9600, as well as the UMAX S900 and J700, and the Power Computing PowerWave and PowerTowerPro.

    hmmm

in the macNN forums, a user reports that it takes nearly 20 minutes for Classic to start on his 8500 ... not sure i'd want to run X on one of the 604/50mhz machines!

    OS X on legacy Macs

Well, unless somebody figures out how to install on a G3 or G4 upgraded machine, what is the point? OS X might run on a legacy machine, but it would probably be like watching a dog walk on his hind legs. That is, nobody cares how WELL he does it - they just marvel that he can do it at all (to paraphrase Johnson).

gosh, the first paragraph of the referenced article says "The original processors in these machines will work, as will G3 or G4 upgrade cards."

    Works on 7300 with G3

I wish people would not belly ache so much, especially if
they have no experience with Mac OS X on Pre-G3 machines. The
performance is acceptable on my 7300/400 Mhz G3 machine. Even
on newer G4 machines , Mac OS X needs improvements
(speed up) in a number of areas. Hopefully, 10.1 will address
these and make the majority of us fairly happy.

I only wish that more video cards could be made to work with these older machines. Many thanks to Ryan Rempel and others for helping us run Mac OS X on our older machines. You can get
further info from his site at

    OLD News

Ryan Rempel had listed this information on his homepage.mac.com/RyanRempel site since the Public Beta became available. I used it on March 24th to install on a PM9500/180MP (G3/300).

Ryan moved the site to OWC about a month ago, maybe evenn before that. MacNN needs to get on the ball.
