The Apple retail store at the Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota is nearly ready for its debut this Saturday, August 11, according to MacNN reader Adam B. "I was at the Mall of America this weekend, peeked into the new Apple Store (between the barriers which are set up around the front), and could clearly see iMacs and iBooks along the side of the wall; some on the shelf, and some still in-box. Several workers were milling about, laying some electrical cords, and finishing the check-out area."

Grand Opening

Anyone planning on going to the opening, and know what time the doors open, or when they expect a line to form? I'll be in the cities that morning but have to catch a plane, just trying to figure out if I can make it.

Opening

There appears to be an MOA 9th anniversary breakfast at 9:00 AM on the 11th so I imagine the doors will open about 8:30 -8:45. Normal Saturday hours would be 9:30. Apple seems to show the store having a 10:00 opening time.

I'd be there about 8:30, I think, to get an early spot in line.

The preview (invite only) is Friday night 6-8.
The store opens for real on Saturday at 10.

Any Purchase Experience?

Does anyone one know if I can customize a mac purchase at an Apple store? I would imagine that I would still have to wait until one arrives, or could be shipped to my house.

I would like to pay cash for a new customized system, something that's not so quick and easy to do via a web purchase. (Last time I checked, most sites make you wait a few days for your check to clear.)

Customization

I believe you can customize a system in the Apple Store, yes. You'll have to order it online from within the store, but I'm pretty sure you can pay for it in the store. Then they ship it to your house when it's been made.

BTW, what's with the guy and the "you are belong too" thing? "You are belong too?" What the heck is that? Apparently he didn't hear it enough times to even notice what they were saying...

I hope to GOD the Apple Store is as far away from the insipid Barbie Store as possible. I hate the Mall of America and try to avoid going there at all cost. Now it looks like I have no choice (as my will is not my own)...

Downlow on the Mac Store

Alright the Store is looking extremely good, we have most all equipment set up. Digital Cameras, both video and still, and PDA's are the ones not quite ready yet. We have the most software of any store so far, about twice as the other three in fact.
As far as customizing systems... you can purchase through the Apple Store for major modifications, and you are able to do that in the store. The only mods on the computers we are allowed to make are Ram, and Airport cards, beyond that it must be purchased online.
As far as a line goes, expect it to start forming as soon as the Mall of America opens the doors, it'll really start picking up about 1 1/2 hours to 1 hour before the store opens. We are projected to be the busiest store thus far, so prepare to deal with lines. Beyone this info I'm kinda hushed, but.... any questions you may have about the store, post them, I'll do my best to answer them.

Oh one more tidbit, store opens at 9am and will close at 10pm this is final, so no further confusion. The apple event on Friday is V.I.P. night and unless you recieved an invite a month or so ago, I'm not sure when they sent them out, don't plan on coming cause you will not be allowed in. Oh and if you want a free t-shirt get in line early, Willow Bend only had 1000 shirts.

Q for apple store manager guy: How are the other stores doing? are they still getting a lot of traffic or was it an opening day phenom?

The other stores are doing great, steady business thus far. From what I've heard everyone that comes into the store is just happy to be there. There has been a pretty consistant flow, and the stores have stayed pretty damn busy. The Mall of America's customer base is something like 5 times that of Glendales, and hopefully we will be the highest grossing store so far.
And I'm not the Store Manager, not an assistant, but something like that... *wink* *wink*, you'll see me in the store on opening day, and maybe I'll even help you buy your computer.

does not say when the grand opening will be. It does say "normal" store hours are 10am for Saturdays. The "apple store employee" that posted earlier here stated that the grand opening is at 9am. I sure hope the official Apple page gets updated to leave no doubt. We don't want the headline to be "800 Apple Fans Pissed Off Over Cofusion at MOA." Anybody with the power to do, please tell Apple to make this clear on their website.
