Panasonic has introduced the NV-EX21 DV digital camcorder, which is the first device of its kind to include a detachable network-ready digital still camera. The NV-EX21 will capture video in the QuickTime-based MPEG-4 format and include Bluetooth wireless capabilities. The $1700 camcorder will go on sale September 1 in Japan, and launch in the United States early next year.

    Bluetooth and MPEG4 NOW?

I'm amazing that there's a product shipping in less than one month that will have Bluetooth and Quicktime MPEG-4! I didn't even know the official MPEG-4 standard was finalized. This has got to be a misprint! I wonder if it'll come with a special MPEG-4 Quicktime extention. Boy, I'd sure like to get my hands on THAT! =)

    Not so exciting

Sounds like an impressive piece of hardware, but I'm rather skeptical of things like the MPEG-4 in this camera. In my experience, the Japanese market is a lot more willing to swallow proprietary or non-finalized standards than the rest of the world, and while it may sound cool (and even be cool from a purely technical standpoint), they're usually overpriced, and I hate getting stuck with something that doesn't work with anything in a few months. Digital VHS, old DVD-R standards, DVD-RW digital camcorders--they all sound great, but if you actually owned one, it'd probably be a very expensive orphen in a matter of months.

This camera probably does handle MPEG-4 and Bluetooth, but I wouldn't bet on it working with the "real" versions of those standards once they're finalized...
