Canon introduces Optura100 MC DV Cam

Canon has introduced the Optura100 MC, a digital camcorder that has a 1.3M megapixel CCD image sensor to capture digital video and digital photos at 1280 X 960 resolution. The new device features a 10x zoom lens plus 200x digital zoom with Optical Image Stabilization; built-in Auto Pop-up Flash; and extended Recording Mode to deliver four hours of video recording on one 80-minute MiniDV videotape. The Canon Optura100 MC will be available in September 2001 at a suggested list price of $1,899, and sports FireWire connectivity.

Wow!

This gear just gets better and better. Not only does it seem to have good 'prosumer' features, but the addition of good quality stills, MMC, flash, light and directional mike... wow!

I have an Elph and love it. It has a CF slot. I thought for sure all of Canon's camers would continue to have CF slots.

This little guy looks sweet.

I have a pair of Canon binoculars with the optical image stabilization feature, and it works VERY well. My bet is that you'll be blown away by handheld video from this one.

"digital video and digital photos at 1280 X 960 resolution" is wrong. The digital video is 720x480 like all DV camera. Take a look at Canon's page. This is not a HDTV camera (unfortunately).

confused

I think your confused Ugh...MMC. Canons DV cameras are different from their still camera line. When I bought my elfph I was trying to see if I could afford a DV camera that would produce good stills. I felt that the only DV cameras that would take good stills at the same time would be the ones that have 3 CCD's in them. Now Canon has come out with this one this is promising. However, what I'm really waiting for is the CMOS technology that is supposed to bring higher performance and lower cost to digital video. Does anyone have any news on how they are doing on that?

Upon further thought...I think the canon DV cameras should sport CF too...why wouldn't they exactly? Why make the choice of MMC or SD. This confused me when I was looking at their DV line compared to their still line.

I don't know, it's real pain in the a** when you're trolling, you want to see if anyone has taken the bait, so you press reload... and post again.

In IE I get a prompt at least "repost form data?" so you know it's going twice. It would be trivial for MacNN to implement some filtering that checks to see if the exact same post has been submitted from the same IP...

Compared to Optura Pi?

All my friends claim that the Canon Optura Pi is THE camera to get for consumer grade video productions with iMovie or Final Cut. Reading reviews on various websites, the PI looks outstanding. Great resolution in low light. Optical stabilization. Very well designed ergonomically.

So my question is what does the new Optura have that the PI did not?

The Pi came out over a year ago at around the same price point as this one is now, but currently you can find the Pi for under $1,000. Is the price difference worth it? What features in the new camera am I overlooking?

Stop the press

This is great for the average consumer of webcaster BUT shooting 80 minutes on a 60minute tape. This is no prosumer friendly camera. What this does is slow down the video tape. Remember how Uncle Fred put Ghostbusters, My Little Pony the Movie, and Jaws 2 all on one 120min SP VHS tape? 6hours EP (aka SLP). Now remember after watching this twice how crappy the quality got? This camera works just like Uncle Fred. If you are prosumer get at least a DV that records 60min on a 60min tape, or a more professional DVCAM system 40min on a 60minute tape (the best and most stable format; besides DigiBeta and HD of course).

WARNING:
Know this though, Canon does make superior lenses and that is an important factor in video. Also the CCD and many other factors tie into image quality. I saw this because I do not want to mislead any reader and have Broadcaster Expo keynote defunct the tape speed/image quality myth. I do not do this out of the kindness from my heary, but because the tape speed/image quality myth is a lot harder to say than the mHz myth.

1280 x 960 confusion

1280 x 960 is the resolution for the stills it captures. 720 x 480 is still the resolution for video. the stills go to the memory card (hence, MC), and the video still goes to the tape. so FCP/iMovie won't have to be updated because they won't deal with the stills on the MC.

Non-issue

FCP can take almost any resolution. I just created a banner in FCP (to show the other extreme). Just read the article about using FCP for HDTV on apple.com.

This is not a HDTV camera as someone already pointed out however.

MMC card

I'm sure they went with MMC cards because of size, this camera looks real small, and a compact flash slot is HUGE compared to a MMC slot. I like this camera, I just bought a Optura PI a few weeks ago and I'm glad I didn't wait as this is a verticle camera which I find shakes too much for me. But other than that this looks like another winner piece. Check out the DV.com forum for more disscussion on it.

Extended recording mode is a selectable OPTION. In standard recording mode, it will record 60 minutes on a 60 minute tape, like any other DVcam. Duh.

Did you even read the news item? It says it will record 4 HOURS (that's 320 minutes) on an 80 minute tape in extended recording mode, not 80 minutes on a 60 minute tape. Stop and think before posting alarming c***.

I second that, put it next to a Sony DV camera and I pretty sure they look very similar. That's a first for Canon, copying Sony for their design. I knew Sony was using Canon lens, but this is poor taste.
