Apple France Q2 results not so rosy

MacGeneration reports on a new study detailing Apple's share of the market in France for the second quarter of 2001. Apple France sold 28,570 units during the quarter, and market share decreased from 3.7 percent in Q2 2000 to 2.7 percent in Q2 2001. "The consumer market in France is weak, but the professional market remains strong," reports Chris Laporte. Apple is now the 9th ranked computer maker in France.

Apple's problem

In a single word...

Advertisements

US ads are very good... in the States. But is is utopian to think that such ads are going to be as effective elsewhere in the world (if Apple advertises at all, which is a big problem in itself... no ads, no brand recognition !).

For once, Apple should look at Microsoft to get some understanding of other's culture : MS ads are localized and refer to local folks : that sells much more because people can identify to the product...

In short, if Apple wants to increase its worldwide sales, it should :

a) advertise

b) use culturally appropriate advertisement

c) advertise

Trying to excuse to loss of sales by arguing that the economy isn't at its best is fallacious : if the economy's health was the only thing at stake here, the number of Mac sold would be lower, but the market share would remain the same. But the market share is quickly going down. At this pace, Apple is going to become a US company instead of an international one...

Apple stores...

France is really one country where Apple needs Apple Stores...
Actually it's very difficult to come and buy a Macintosh because most of the computer sellers (like Fnac, Darty...) don't want to sell Macs and prefer to sell Pcs :(
Apple really needs to have its own stores and also do a lot of adverstising about Mac OS ! A few people know Mac OS and there are too many bad rumors about it.

Apple France

Apple has been relatively slack in its attention to its international customers as of late. (I'm American.) It would make a lot of sense for Apple to revamp its international businesses at this point.

A good starting place would be to resection the geographic segments of the company.

A second goal should be, as the gentleman/lady before me posted, advertise and do local advertising. Otherwise, ANY country sees Apple as American... An immediate turnoff.

A third goal should be to open up Apple Stores (retail) internationally.

But, of course, I'm sure Apple is already working on all of this. =)

Apple in france

Hi !
Lots of cool frenchies uses Macs and France is a cool place suckers, but the resellers has always complain about apple attitude in this country (were and how do we sell ?, in small shops or with big ones (FNAC / Darty) ? (60 Million people there folks !)
About Apple stores :-))) THAT WOULD BE GREAT - Sales men in big stores are jerks, and no competent

applestore in france

it is true applestores should move to France. Paris/Lyon and Toulouse for starts.
in the mqrket for a new ibook, went to FNAC, they only sell macs on special order. found one machine at the computer circus and bought it. just ordered two imacs for the kids thru the online store. they're fine to deal with, but getting the stuff the second yu pay for it is better...
besides being the best, macs are trendy in france. but like everything trendy, once the masses get it it looses its appeal...
So come on apple, open them stores, drop the prices a tad, and you'll be number one not just with the trendies but with the masses, which is the politically correct thing to do.

If the French are so sophisticated, why didn't they buy a lot of Cubes? I'm typing this on mine and it is indeed a work of art. I'm wondering how many French were aware of the product.

To all who are saying that France lags behind the US when it comes to technology, I would they that:
American People you piss me off: Your president sucks and your arrogance is just a sign of your decline.
At least, to forget this tough reality you can drinkbFrench wine.
Don't forget it, OS 7 was made by Jean Louis Gass�e. The best programing environment in the world was created by Kahn (Borland) and Yep: We own Universal.

I'm sorry for all the great people in the US, but when I read this forum I can't stop thinking that American people suck...

Same in Germany as well

Hello,

not only the french ( where Apple used to be even stronger than 3.7% ), but all throughout Europe Apple�s sales and market share are declining rapidly.
From what I know from Apple people in Germany, is that Apple US is keeping them short of money for marketing and promotions. The new ibook for example has rarely gotten any advertising at all, while the oyster modell got a lot 1 year ago.
I don�t want to start price discussion, but as long as Greenspan tries to keep the dollar high, we won�t see any cheaper macs in Europe. Different for other computer makers, who offer very low prices, to get their stuff of the shelves. Apple has to learn, that different markets have to get different marketing and pricing. In Germany we have very though competition in the computer market and Apple isn�t really convin cing if they tell us, that they have to keep their prices up , because dollar is so high, when everybody else tries to sell me their stuff at lowest price possible. Apple has to adjust to prices in every country and to get away from the one size fits all solution, otherwise they will never make a significant increase in market share outside the US.
Our Government is talking about giving every pupil a laptop. I bet Apple is not in the race...

All over Europe

It is not only France but all Europe, you can argue that french suck, europeans suck (british are the suckiest, read their posts, but they are not real europeans, just ask them). Then think that 50% of Apple's sales are international sales and US and Japan markets are saturated and declining, who do you think are going to buy those "new" iMacs?

Gee, how did I predict it

I predicted on reading this article (before seeing the post) that a ton of Apple faithful would, rather than posting possible plans to solve a market-share issue, would mock the French for bad taste, hygeine, or something equally silly.
Apple's a great company don't get me wrong, but rather than acting like an alcoholic blaming everyone and everything else when there's a problem, maybe the solution is to be proactive. Find the real cause of the problem, fix it, be happy about the improvements, and move on to the next problem.
