ARM processors may show up in desktops

ARM processors, which were once used in Apple's Newton PDA, may be making their way into desktop computers. SiS has licensed the ARM7TDMI microprocessor core for use in its product range of integrated chipsets for personal computers that will eventually lead to system-on-a-chip designs. However, products based on ARM processors in desktops won't likely show up until the end of next year.

    ARm

Wow - perhaps time to revive Newton OS?

We already have had desktops using ARM - check up the ex-Acorn. Called today Element-14, they did a long time ARM based desktops, using ARM3 and newer. ARM was born by Acorn, and it was some time after, that they spun it off as an separate company.

Acorn did a lot of interesting prototypes, laptops etc. Sadly, they did work together with Oracle on the NC etc . And that failed big time, the Larry Ellison Show never seems interested in getting something out the door to be a sucessful product.....

There still is some companies selling computer, based on Acorns design.

    Apple PDA

all I have to say is that Apple needs to put out a PDA, and then my little world will be happy and complete.

Good idea. Everybody producing PDAs right now is bleeding red ink trying to stay alive, and you want Apple to produce such a product in the midst of a slowdown in global demand for its flagship products.

    Uh huh. Good idea.

Not true - used years ago

The ARM CPU was used in the Acorn Archimedes in the late eighties/early nineties. The machine had it's own OS, was a great and affordable machine for the time but only reached a certain success in the UK.

ARM used to mean "Arcorn RISC Machine" before the company stopped making computers and renamed itself.

That's interesting about Acorn. I often wondered what they did. What is Acorn now?

    Acorn became...

the company now known as "ARM" or "Advanced RISC Machines".

Here's a link with a little information about the Archimedes:
