A Carbonized version of EMacs, the popular UNIX text editor, has been posted. David Caldwell, the tool's author, says "This is a native Mac port, not an X Windows version." The new release works with the Mac OS X 10.0.x, while previous releases worked only on the OS X public beta.

    Isn't that a bit largeÉ

Am I out of touch or does 8MB for a keyboard driven text editor seem a bit large?

Not if you realize what emacs can do; it's more than just a text editor. Take all of BBEdit's capabilities, build in a lisp interpreter, COMPLETE programmability, and (unfortunately) code the whole thing in Lisp. Then you've got emacs.

I like using it to code lisp, but not for every day editing.

    cpu hog

use the bundled emacs instead. this port grabs up to 70% cpu idle.

    Other Emacs

FYI, there *was* also a nice full-GUI Emacs.app which was written for NEXTSTEP, and ported to OpenStep and OS X Server. I really must look this up again, and see if it's not too hard to get going in OS X proper. It was a nice version.

    Crappy software :(

First it's pretty big for only an emacs app, it's also buggy (there is no menus !!! even the apple menu disappear...) and there isn't any advantage on the terminal version :(

It would be cool if the menus bug could be fixed

    xStep Windowing version

I've been looking for this too. If it's not based on Emacs 20, thought, there could be major work to do.

    Other Emacs - yes

To the poster above who was looking for an updated version of the old Emacs.app from the Nextstep days, you can find it at http://emacs-on-aqua.sourceforge.net/
The port was updated by Christophe de Dinechin. It runs, but it crashes a whole lot. Maybe it's just me, though. :0)

    vi editor

I believe having a vi editor is the only sensible thing to do. Vi is much more efficient and I personally get disgusted with the repulsive emacs editor.
