Roxio has reported record earnings of $7.2 million, or $.43 per share on revenue of $37 million for its first quarter ended June 30, 2001. Roxio President and CEO Chris Gorog attributed part of the company's financial success for the quarter to sales of Toast 5 Titanium for the Mac, its popular CD burning software. Roxio plans to launch a major television and print advertising campaign later this quarter to help drive sales and connect the Roxio brand with CD burning and digital media.

    what to do?

Alright here it is. Apple's stock price is in the s******. People are let down because there is no new iMac, no 1ghz G4, no speedbumped Ti, no handheld. Apple's doing okay, considering the economy, but things don't look good in the future with no new product and OSX native apps lagging. No Photoshop for OSX, etc. What does Apple need?

Apple needs an affordable computer that geeks will like. Geeks like Unix, geeks like the stability of OSX. Right now though, geeks don't like Mac. Why? Geeks like to tinker and play with their computers. They are willing to spend large $ on computers, but they also expect cutting edge stuff.

The iMac, although reasonably priced, is not suitable. It has no slots, and upgrade possibilities are limited. The G4 tower looks nice, and offers good expansion, but looks pricey when compared to a P4 or Athlon system for $999.

The problem is clear - the G4 is an attractive computer, but it's a ripoff. If Apple can produce the iMac and sell it for $900, why does the G4 tower cost $1699? Supposedly the G4 chip only costs about $50 more than the G3 in the quantity Apple buys. And the G4, unlike the iMac, doesn't come with a monitor! It does have gigabit ethernet (which most people can't even make use of - but let's say it's worth $50).

If the iMac monitor is worth $50, that cancels out the ethernet. So there is a net cost difference of $800, for a computer that is marginally faster for most computing tasks given the same clockspeed.

This pricing has played out in the marketplace, where Apple's fairly priced portables have an easy job competing with PCs. No one wants the overpriced G4, or the limited capabilities of the iMac, however, and sales have sagged.

An ideal solution would be to introduce an economy priced computer, in the price range of the iMac, that featured the better expansion capabilities of the G4 tower.

Based on simple economics, it's easily possible for Apple to produce such a machine and make a profit. Current iMacs can be had for $900. Our hypothetical G3 tower doesn't need a monitor (power users already have one) so we save $50 right off the bat. Put that $50 towards a motherboard with 1 AGP and 3 PCI slots. Instead of the iMacs' custom shaped enclosure, use a standard ATX case. Make it blue, silver, whatever you like. That costs us nothing over the iMac. You're left with a tower computer, powered by a fast G3, with 4 slots for expansion to satisfy the power users, onboard USB and FireWire, built in 10/100 ethernet, 56k modem, all at the price of the current low end iMac - $900. Apple would even say money on storage and shipping, since without a monitor, it would be lighter. So it could easily hit the $900 price point, and maybe $800.

Except since it can be tweaked, non-entry level people actually would buy this machine (unlike the iMac). Right now, Apple is losing sales to nerds on a budget. iMac isn't e

    Upgrading to T5 in Europe

Roxio have been far too busy making money to worry about their customers, particularly if they're stupid enough to live somewhere other than North America. After numerous emails have been ignored I've stumbled across the link which allows you to upgrade from Toast 4 (full version) to Toast 5 at a discounted price: from www.roxio.com ignore the English (Europe) link and instead go to the Deutsher Shop. This offers the upgrade at a DM price but as you get into the order process it offers the English version at a sterling price. I took this and they delivered very quickly from Germany. No thanks to their so-called Customer Service department in the US...
