America Online is close to releasing an interoperable version of its instant messenging (IM) client that would allow users of both AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ to communicate, according to a recent status report filed by AOL with the FCC. In the report, AOL said it had begun internal testing of server-to-server operability and that it's on track to begin testing with other services by the end of the summer.

    umm, that's Interoperabl

Meaning it can operate between other things, in this case one client that could be used to communicate via ICQ and AIM. I'd be happy to get this app, being that I'm too timid to switch to AIM, but I'd love to keep my contacts from ICQ which I've had for years.

    Apple

Look at it this way - a FireWire iMac is $1000, right? Take off the monitor, which represents probably $150 of the retail cost. (Apple's cost - $40 or so). That's $850. Put it in a tower case and add 3 PCI slots (net cost - $25, or even close to zero if you use a cheap case. Even allowing $50 for a nice case, that's $900 for a G3 in a tower case with PCI slots.

The cheapest G4 tower is $1699. Is the G4 worth $800 more than our hypothetical G3 tower? I don't think so, especially if the CPU is upgradeable in our cheap machine. That's the problem, the numbers on the G4 towers don't add up.

If I buy a Dell, every step up in CPU speed is roughly $200, a bit more for the really top end. With Apple, the same 1 or 2 steps in CPU speed is a $1500 increase. That's the price of a whole second machine!

Based on these calculations, it's obvious that Apple could profitably a fast G3 tower at $900 and make a tidy profit, maybe more than on the iMac. They owe it to their shareholders and loyal mac users to pursue this opportunity.

    FCC?

Why did they have to file "papers" with the FCC? Besides being an unconstitutional agency(the FCC that is), federal government has no authority over communications.

First off its fine if they post the news... but do it earlier in the day. Not as an after thought. Second how does the story related to OS X directly?

How does some loony asking apple for a G3 tower help you learn something?

FCC being an unconstitutional agency... well it is constitutional the federal goverment gave it the power and authority to rule over disputes over public airways... the govt gave them the power to divy up the airways to a.) make money for the govt and b.) inusre that the airways are used for our good. Now looser smoke some crake and over dose.
