Rather XP Shipped on time

To be honest, I'd rather Windows XP shipped on time, with the product activation features intact, than later with it watered down. More customers who are currently entertaining the possibility of switching from Windows to Linux or Mac OS would be that much more willing to switch than if product activation became somewhat more tolerable.

I think our lawmakers and judiciary should call for the immediate selling off of Microsoft, period! I find their corporate attitude overpowering and dangerous.

MacOS X does not use SSH

... at least not the one mentioned in the article. The article is about a Commercial implementation of SSH called (confusingly enough) "SSH Secure Shell". This is not what is installed in MacOS X, and MacOS X is not venerable to this exploit.

ssh commercial version

I think that's for commercial version (Slashdot already had noted it). MacOS X uses OpenSSH, a different implementation which doesn't have this flaw.

ssh != openssh

ssh is commercial, they are the people who made it for free, at first, then under a more and more restrictive license until they went commercial.

THEN, they went down on people using 'ssh' in the name of their free stuff to protect their 'intellectual properties'

they are bugged? good. Put them into that bin there, labelled 'microsoft'.

openssh is superior in functionalities, anyway

SSH

The problem wasn't in SSH, it was in telnetd and there is already a patch for it. We've already patched all our Unix servers.

I sure hope OS X supports SSH - I don't know since I haven't used it yet, but it had better work. It would be incredibly lame to have an X environment without SSH - duh!

SSH, telnet

The telnetd hole was a separate issue entirely. It should be moot because there's no reason whatsoever for anyone to be running telnet anymore, though - I haven't used it in years. Unfortunately some people still haven't gotten the message. The Mac OS has a couple of especially decent SSH clients, actually, and it's generally even more convenient to use than cleartext telnet (because you can log in automatically via key exchange, even passwordless if the source host is highly secured).

The SSH vulnerability is in the commercial SSH v3 server, not in the somewhat free 1.x versions that many sites are running or in any of the OpenSSH versions that are in most open source Unix distributions (as well as Mac OS X). I don't actually know of anyone at all who's using SSH v3, but there may be a few commercial clients who do. I would expect that they're few enough in number that the vendor was easily able to contact them all immediately.

The telnetd vulnerability is much worse, but it's frankly not your biggest problem if you're still running cleartext telnet (or FTP!) in this day and age. Patch it anyway, but then just turn it off for good.

Part of me wishes apple would make the computer to shut this complete idiot up. Another part of me hopes apple doesn't just to piss him off. A third part wishes he'd just go buy a freakin' PC and leave us alone.
