Several readers note that Apple has released a Web Sharing Update for Mac OS X, available via the Software Update control panel, that "delivers enhancements and security improvements to Apache, including support for the case-insensitive Mac OS Extended file system (HFS+), and the latest version of OpenSSH."

    Attention

Everybody who has installed Apache 1.3.20 or and PHP 4.04.....

This update overwrites your settings...Apache is downgraded to 1.3.19 and php is 4.04 pl1...I had to recompile PHP once again.....But now it's fine.

    Update or Downgrade

Is there any place to find out the specifics of this update. Last month I compiled the latest and greatest of Apache, PHP (with PostgreSQL support).

I'm not inclined to blow those away but I hate to miss out anything else that might be bundled.

    Externally Updating

You can't have it both ways, you can follow Apple's upgrade path or upgrade select parts of your system. But if you do the later, expect to have lots of problems.

    Uh, Apple... Hello...

As a longtime Debian GNU/Linux user, I was shocked the first time Software Update whacked my customized copy of /etc/ssh_prng_cmds (BTW--wondering why it takes so long to login to a remote system? Comment out the "arp -a -n" entry). Apple should really consider using a package management system like Debian's. There's no reason why a modern OS should gratuitously overwrite locally modified configuration files.

    Several Questions?

has anyone who has added Tomcat used the updater? Tomcat still work?

I've backed up all of the configuration files which I modified, as I'd like to just copy them back after the update. Question is: Is the configuration file different after the update? Does it contain new parameters? Or, does my old one contain depreciated params?

I agree that a package management system would be nice.
