NYT: Apple retains pioneering spirit

updated 07:05 pm EDT, Mon July 23, 2001

A New York Times article looks at Apple's future outlook in the wake of last week's Macworld Expo New York and semi-annual financial analyst meeting. "At Apple, especially since Mr. Jobs returned from exile in 1997, some of the old pioneering spirit still lives. Apple forges directions in personal computing that others often follow, or at least cannot ignore." [free registration required]

    Well-balanced

I thought the article was quite a balanced view of Apple's situation, aimed at readers who had a knowledge of Apple that is less extensive than that of the people who read MacNN or other news sites.

The hard-core computer techies are already pretty much lined up into Mac, Windows or Linux camps, and it's hard to get them to switch sides. Where Apple has real opportunity, and it was reflected in this article, is from the "casual" computer user who really doesn't care so much about which empire their OS comes from so long as they can use it easily and do the things they want to do with it and that it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

This article served that purpose well, by pointing out some of the cool stuff that Apple is doing, reminding people who might not follow computer news daily that Apple is still out there and they do have a real choice, and perhaps prompting them to look closer at the Mac as a computer that would meet their needs better than the alternatives.

    I get tired of...

I getting tired of all these folks saying that in effect, it is Apple's decision to have slower processors. Like Jobs and crew sit around and say, "Yeah, let's keep the processors slowly increasing, but let's not keep pace with anyone else. That way, we can pay less for the chips, and charge a premium!"

Going through these message boards, one hears the comments over and over again to this tune, that Apple is deliberately keeping the speeds down, etc. But nobody really talks about the manufacturer of the chips, Motorola -- why is it that everybody will quickly blame Apple, when in fact it is Motorola who has been sluggish. Of all people, I would think Mr. Jobs would LOVE to have a 2 ghz G4, so he can go up to folks and watch their eyes fall as his Mac TOTALLY dusts everything out there. My point is that it is quite easy to blame Apple, but I will reiterate what many HAVE said, look at the past 7 months!! What other company in the computer industry has done anything NEAR what Apple has achieved??? Granted, a company like Apple, to survive, has to innovate basically or die, but my god, stop the complaining. I'm writing this note by the way on my new 867mhz G4, which is nothing to complain about. What I'm noticing really is software, not the massive mhz engine, although this IS by far the fastest mac I've ever used!

So blah blah blah. Just try and have a bit faith. Working from this computer, it is damn easy for me at least :)

I am sick of the babies

People that keep talking about how Apple didn't make a showing this last week at MacWorld should frankly shut up.

Apple DID unveil new products, just not the ones everybody had hoped for. It is a shame that sites like Rumors and the others focus soley on the rumors and not on the realities. If a flat-panel iMac was both feasible and in the grand scheme of this rev, then it would have been there. the fact is Steve Jobs has to make money, innovate, and try to keep us Mac fanatics happy all at the same time. The new G4 is a really cool box, as it has added a slot, faster processors and re-enabled dual-processor configs for the higher end machines. This was no small feat.

The iMac fiasco is the rumor mongers' own fault, period. They were the ones talking up a flat-panel-based iMac, not Apple. Apple will deliver it if and when they are ready to. If it is cost prohibitive at this point, to fault them for not releasing it is selfish.

This was the Welcome Mac OS X show, not a hardware show. To get hardware with it should be treated as a bonus, and should be respected.
