Afternoon tech news: Despite Microsoft's earlier bashing of the open-source platform, the Redmond giant has released the source code for Windows CE, its OS for hand-held devices; IBM is celebrating the birth of its PC, which debuted from Big Blue in 1981; Lexmark (whose printers are being offered free with Macs) has warned of lower profits and revenues for the second half of the year.

    "despite"

If you had any idea of the story you're reporting on, you'd know that it's not despite their open-source bashing, it's part of it. Microsoft's "shared source" licence is an attempt to "embrace and extend" the open source movement in the same way they attack open technical standards. Since the "despite" appears nowhere in the CNet story, I can only assume it was added by a clueless MacNN story poster.

btw, that should be "all your passport login are belong to us". You seem to have completely missed the point of an already tired joke by correcting the grammar, of all things.

    core

only the core is open sourced, like darwin. Plus, it's a very restrictive lisence

    Real reason

You notice that they publicly made available one of the programs they have that has garnered little interest from developers and hardware makers. I'm sure this is all about trying to extend the reach of CE (esp. the allowing for use for research and instruction). And since its "shared source", there's no guarantee that future versions will be open. (And where's the info about submitting changes, etc).
