MacGIMP.org reports that the first release of MacGIMP, an open-source image editor for Mac OS X, has been posted online at two mirror sites (site 1, site 2) for anyone to access. The download does not include an X Windows Server, which must be downloaded separately. A CD containing all of the tools can also be ordered.

    This is stupid

It's probably less trouble to just use fink to install XFree86 and Gimp than use this. If this included a rootless XFree86 and was a point and click installer, then I'd say it was something special. Or if it somehow installed a single OS X icon that could be opened like a real OS X application. As it is, it's pretty darn stupid.

    And Graphic Converter..

Graphic Converter is already available and X'ified. And scriptable. OK, not free, but quality rarely is. (GIMP is only free if your time is worthless. Why is it that so many would-be highly-paid programmers do software that requires such mindbending?)

You would have to be so obtuse to use this that it's hard to describe. It's not for graphics editing - it's for finagling about with the code and being proud that you're using something incredibly hard to use, rather than bloody doing some work.

Graphic Converter is a great package (hey, pun!) and about 10x cheaper than Photoshop. Which of course if you're on X....

    Delusions at MacGIMP

In a remarkable bit of reality distortion, the MacGIMP web site notes that Steve J failed to mention MacGIMP in his discussion of X apps at MWNY, and further notes that this must simply be an oversight. Umm…I certainly woudn't point to MacGIMP as a representative, or an exemplary X app. It's more of a programmer's hobby than a real graphics tool. It's most definitely not ready for prime time, and I doubt it ever will be. Sorry, gimpers.

    They're joking, right?

    From MacGIMP:
"In what is surely an accidental ommission on the part of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the keynote speech at MacWorld in New York neglected to make mention of MacGIMP. Quark and Adobe were given stage time, but we all know that the real reason high-schoolers will buy a Mac is that they can now run the GIMP on it."

    Funny!

"but we all know that the real reason high-schoolers will buy a Mac is that they can now run the GIMP on it."

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! I used GIMP on LinuxPPC... what a load of c*** it is! It's even worse then the graphics apps for Be OS! lol

In fact, Linux, and XWindow(s) sucks anyway...
